I have to admit I totaly love Richelle Mead her writing style. I was really looking forward to this book, I loved Vampire Academy and was excited to see how the spin-off of this series would be. I expected just like Vampire Academy lost of action and romance, and because this one would be about alchemist I expected more insight in the cultre and work of the alchemists. I think it was because of these expectations that I felt a bit dissapointed by this book. It certainly was a good book, but there was less romance, action and alchemist insights than I expected. There was way more school life than expected. And there were two subplots which sometimes kept popping up but only in the end these plots really developed. I think it is because this is the first book that I was a bit disapointed, new charcaters are introduced, we get to learn Sydney more (I like Sydey as POV) and old characters are shown from a different point of view. I expect there will be more romance and action in the next book, now we have a idea who and what the characters are. I aslo have to say that the writing style of this book was really good, as expected of Richelle Mead. So I felt a bit disapointed by this book, but I'm sure book two will be better. I do reccomend everyone who loves urban fanatsy and/or Vampire Academy to read this one. Just don't expect the same as Vampire Academy, I quess that was my mistake :P.

I remember reading "A Child Called It" and revolting at its leering portrayal of the horrors of child abuse in the guise of a motivational tale--but I revolted even more at the way that book ignored the process by which the abused child overcame his atrocious scarring and matured into a well-adjusted husband and father. This was portrayed in a short coda at the end: "I went through all this horror I've just detailed, but then I turned out ok." Yes, but how? This is my primary criticism of Blanco's book, aimed as it is at an audience of young victims. Her tale is a page-turner, especially for those of us who have endured bullying ourselves. Throughout the book, though, adults keep telling the young Blanco, "It will get better. When you're an adult, these things won't matter as much as they do now." Then, sure enough, this wisdom becomes truth, and the Jodee Blanco at book's end is a survivor, a highly successful woman whose years of suffering as an outsider simply sloughed off once she left high school. I recently had the good fortune of hearing Blanco address an audience of teens and teachers on the subject of bullying, and her message was far more compelling and immediate in person than it is in this book. Nevertheless, I can see real value in having young victims of bullying read this book. Perhaps /its power is more profound when focused on those currently enduring such abuse rather than those of us less fortunate than Blanco, whose suffering in the past has not yet sloughed off.
