Frightening, near-future SF that's held up well. Main character is a privileged, ordinary, 'nice' 12 year old girl attending a private school. Her father loses his job, and we see what society is like outside the privileged circles as the girl adapts and learns to survive as a member of a violent youth gang. It’s like “Lord of the Flies”, but slow, convincing, and with a very tight focus on a single child’s disintegration.

I just couldn't get into this book. It is very long winded and none of the characters are very likable--not that that's what makes a good book. I didn't feel like the story was going anywhere. 100 pages in and I had to put it down. I almost never stop reading a book once I've started but this book just wasn't worth my time.

I gave it 3 stars because it was easy to guess the outcome of the story lien. However, I enjoyed it because it was a quick read with a spiritual tone as well as a mystery/romance but not my usual genre in reads.

A little uneven, but interesting. Some sections are more intruging than others, and he only really hits his stride (where you get the best sense of what he's actually trying to accomplish) in the conclusion. Still, a quick and interesting read, with a minimal amount of scienc-y lingo.

I'm not going to finish this book. "Out of Shadows" is 2 novels and I have no desire to read the second part. The hero, Aiden, is a whiney, self-absorbed pain in the butt. I read the first 100 or so pages and skipped to the last chapter, just to see if he and Neely do get together. Valerian is one vampire friend is in love with him and he is just as pitiful. Aiden's twin sister, Maeve, isn't even likeable, so why would I read the 2nd novel which is about her. The only one that had any bite was the villain, Lisette and it wasn't much, since her main goal in life was to kill Aiden for his betrayal. I just couldn't read it all.
