A structurally complicated historical novel despite being only 217 pp. Nicholas Dyer, early 18th century architect, practitioner of the dark arts and murderer reaches out through time to modern London creating "Terrour" leaving corpses at the sites of the churches he designed. Time is particularly out of joint and the "shaddowes" of the fear and irrationality he believes to be stronger than sense and reason make themselves felt. In its own quirky and studied way this is a very scary novel.

I've read Aristotle. I've read Quintilian. I've read Cicero. I've read half a dozen books written by guys who aren't dead yet. And none of them come even close to what Doug and ND Wilson accomplish here. This is clear, hearty, powerful stuff--not to mention punchy, quotable, and just a real hoot. If you want the wisdom of the ancients (those dead guys I mentioned up there) without their pomposity and paganism, if you want the advice of the current speech-writing hotshots without their paint-by-numbers, here's-a-list-of-grammar-tricks approach, then this right here is what you want. It'll teach you what rhetoric is (i.e., all of life), what your job is as a rhetorician (speak the truth in love), and how to do it effectively (guts; humility; fall on your face; don't worry--it's not about you). Having sat under the lectures of both these gentlemen and gotten slapped with many, many grades (both good and bad), I know how powerfully their teaching works, and I know that it whips students into shape for a life of words: words written, words spoken, words acted out. So get this book. Read it (slowly). Sip it like fine Scotch. And when you're tanked up, go change the world.

After years of watching and loving the movie, it was finally time to read the book. Though some parts were unexpected, this book added so much to the movie with its additional details on the plot and characters. The unusual format the author writes in has to be adjusted to (he writes as himself at many points, "discovering" and "adapting" this story from another author), but adds originality to it. This is a modern classic.

I'm really loving this series! After getting to know Calvin and Lucy in book one, I loved the addition of Ella to book two, and her relationship with Calvin's brother, Loyal. First off, I just love the name Loyal. :) It's old-fashioned, but it's not cheesy. His name was very suited to his character because he was indeed very loyal to Ella. Ella, on the other hand, also had characteristics that drew me to her - quiet, gentle, and eventually, not a pushover. She grew as an individual from page one all the way to the end. There was also the addition of one more character - Dorothy - and she was just flat crazy. She had this desire to completely control Ella that was seriously disturbing. I really disliked her by the end, but that dislike was proof that the author really did a great job creating her character. Just one more book remains - The Survivor - and I can't wait to read the finale to this great series!
