Merthon and Caris carry the story as lovers who experience many things in the lives together and their lives apart. Ralph, the very nasty Lord is constantly in the story to stir up the pot and make someone's life miserable. I listened to this book and it was very easy to listen to and follow. I enjoy historical fiction and enjoyed the characters and setting of this book. It does not lag at any point in the story, which really says something for the size of the book.
