I read this book because my daughter had all ready and I wanted to see what she was reading. It is very much like Harry Potter except the main characters have no magical powers. It's about two kids who have to stay for a couple weeks with grandparents they barely know. (the children's parents have to go on a cruise with fellow family members. they didn't want to go but were kind of forced to go on "vacation") The kids eventually find out that their grandparents are caretakers of a magical preserve. And there is the possibility that they may be allowed to take over when the grandparents retire. The magical creatures they present in the book are mostly not nice with a few exceptions. And there is the theme that danger is always present because of them living on a preserve. The children are present for Midsummer's eve, in which the creatures run wild for the night, yet another dangerous situation. If I remember correctly, their bedroom is "protected" by magic as long as children are in it and no adults are there. This is yet another children's story where adults are not always present and the kids eventually are on their own against evil and must save the day without knowing where to go for help. At one point, the girl does pray, not specifically to God, but it doesnt get answered at all. This disturbed me-why include it if you aren't going to use it? So many children's books do not present a higher power that will help them in times of trouble! I was disappointed with this book.

Hayatımın Hatası TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

The majority of this book, besides the introduction and the last few essays, consists of reviews of art shows that Hughes published in times magazine in the early-to-mid 80s. His style of criticism is perfect - it finds that wonderful balance of historical context, biographical information, and (the part that so many critics miss) astute observations in front of the work itself. One of the main themes of his writing is that great art is built on history, rather than (in the prevailing myth of modernism) trying to tear it down. Not surprisingly, this leads to a pessimism on the future of art - combine the decline of art education, an ahistorical attitude on the part of many artists, and the absurd consumerism of the 80s art market (eerily similar to what's happening in Chelsea today), and even the most talented artists are at a disadvantage. It's interesting to compare this book to the equally fantastic Unnatural Wonders, but Arthur C. Danto. While Danto agrees with Hughes assessment of the end of art history - he sees this as an important development. Unconstrained from the "weight" of history, a new pluralism has swept into the art world - and artists have an unprecedented level of freedom. Personally, I tend towards Hughes outlook - without a framework (and only the most disciplined artists can impose their own framework without history), artistic freedom tends to degenerate into chaos. But it's hard not to appreciate Danto's optimism. Whatever your opinions on the future of art, Robert Hughes provides an important lesson on how to look at and think about art. Having just finished his book, I feel like I need to spend hours, if not days, in the Met - looking at all the older art I tend to walk by, and think about where my own work has come from and where it's going.

Okay, so maybe I have no literary point of view, because I didn't think this book was all that great. But, it's won awards, been made into an Oscar-nominated movie, so, it should be a good story, right? Well, not in my opinion. It took about 130-150 pages to get to the "thing" that happens (obviously something bad, because the book is called "atonement" which would stand to reason that something happens that someone needs to atone for, right?), and then from there, it just sort of seemed to veer off course, until the end when the "atonement" comes into play. (I have not seen the movie, but was told that the "thing" happens in the first 10 minutes. Hmm.) But, I have to say: does the author even know what atonement really means? I don't think he does. Forget the language, where he tries to paint pretty pictures, but I get lost in the long, comma-driven sentences, the story seems a little too simplistic and a little unbelievable to me. That one person could carry such weight to ruin another person's life, in this particular instance, didn't seem plausible. And, frankly, even though we languish for over 100 pages (the first 100) in an attempt to gather some development of characters, I had a hard time really caring about anyone. Is that horrible of me? I mean, I thought it was okay. I could see where someone people might think differently than me. I don't put "I didn't like it" on Goodreads, because frankly, if I don't like it enough, I won't finish it, and therefore, not need to review. This just barely made it. (And, wow, I think this is the worst review I've written on here. Ah, well.)
