omgosh - i really liked this new book by Lorrie Moore. The heroine is so real and likable - and there are these odd, completely realistic scenarios in her life. Very tender.

Jack Reacher as a young boy. Same person as an adult...good story

Concerning faith and our modern cities. Relevant to my studies and deserving of Christendom's attention, but lacking authoritative depth. Secular works by many others fill in the gaps.

I confess, I have never read Wuthering Heights. I know that it's a classic and every young girl should read it but really the opening imagery always put me off. Moors and cliffs are romantic? Since when? Apparently Alice Hoffman based her book on the story of Wuthering Heights. If this is the case, I have less of a reason to read it now. The characters in this book seemed completely unrelatable to me. I never understood the appeal of Hollis and March as a couple or why she would leave her very loving husband for an obvious sociopath. As I've mentioned before, my own experience with infidelity makes me a bit biased but truthfully I just couldn't understand why March was constantly drawn into this sick and twisted relationship where she was seen as an object of a desire and he maintained a puppeteer-like control over her. I see no appeal or romance in that type of relationship. Not to say that the story isn't well written because it is. Hoffman has wonderful prose and imagery and I did feel the intense connection between March and Hollis, I just didn't agree with it so I couldn't fully commit. If you've read Wuthering Heights, I say give it a read just to make the comparison, but other than that, it was just so-so and I liked Practical Magic MUCH better!

Moon is an amiable companion, a musician and writer who obviously has a deep love for his subject. I'm finding his book most illuminating. If, like me, you're a bit of a music snob who thinks she's heard it all, here's ample proof you haven't -- not by a long shot.

Normally I don’t gush about books…but I seriously loved this one!! It had such a great balance of romance, dry humor and action. I just finished reading the Mortal Instruments and I was worried it was going to be another copy of that with different characters but it was nothing like that series, except for the appearance of Magnus Bane, the Lightwoods and Waylands too which was really cool to read about, after just finishing the ‘City of Glass’. I really liked Tessa, I thought she was very consistent character and a really interesting female lead, without being too ‘badass’ or too ‘weak’. I find most female leads tend to fall into one of those categories (not that that’s a bad thing, especially badass female characters but it’s nice seeing someone written with balance) and I am glad to say I couldn’t find any similarities between her and Clary. I did find some similarities between Will and Jace Wayland though….which was a little annoying. Again, they are both jerks but they have soft sides which is suppose to make me like them…and its not like I hate Will or Jace, they were both well written, but I don’t know, I was actually hoping Tessa would end up liking Jem. I thought it was so sweet when they met while he was playing violin, he’s like a little lost puppy. And she always helps him with his illness…I don’t know, I guess for once it would be so awesome if the author made the main character NOT fall in love with the jerk-badass main character and perhaps his sweet, caring best friend? Anyway I am actually really really really excited for the Clockwork Prince!! I can’t wait till it comes out

This is an excellent book by an academic about the art of the short story with an emphasis on the stories of Ernest Hemingway. The general, nonacademic reader will find it most approachable. Lamb looks at stories by de Maupassant, Willa Cather, Chekov, James, and others in light of their influence on young Hemingway. Budding short-story writers would be well advised to look at this book as an inspiration about how to approach narrative, etc. When I finished, I launched into a major re-read of Hemingway's 50-plus short stories, as well as many by de Maupassant, one of my literary heros. Marvelous reading all around.
