My kids introduced me to the Hunger Games series. It was written for a YA audience, but adult readers will appreciate it as well I am sure. Suzanne Collins rocks, and she does not pull any punches. I think that is vital in teen-oriented novels. Never black and white--every shade of gray is explored.

I recently re-read this book for the first time in about 20 years for class. I have to admit, it was quite shocking! My memories of Ma and Pa were completely changed by my adult perspective! It was fascinating. I greatly enjoyed the read this time around, not because of my childhood fascination with frontier life, but because of the relationship dynamics present in the text. Re-read if, if you haven't in a while!

i'm not a didion fan. i'd even go as far to say that this isn't even her best work. she uses a passage from one of her books..."democracy" in this book and i found that to be better written than the work represented here. all that said, i did appreciate this book. the topic is not one that is easy to write about, especially not as soon after such a devastating event, but she writes with clarity, she takes a realistic approach while realizing, at the same time, how it's nearly impossible to think clearly and realistically about the sudden death of her husband. it was difficult for me to read, which is why it took me so long, but i found it to be an informative text on the way in which we grieve in modern society.

Yes, it's one of these terrific rip-roaring Colonial era adventure yarns. No, it's not as offensive as, say, H. Rider Haggard's "King Solomon's Mines." But has anyone noticed that the basic premise of this book is that distinguished gentleman Phileas Fogg and his slavish French servant Passepartout (what precisely does this imply of the French?) travel about the world, taking in the curious customs of the locals in various current and former British colonies, and basically making fun of the fact that they're all so bizarre compared to the esteemed normalcy of the Briths? The Americans are a wild, anarchic, violent bunch who hold riots on election day. The Indians are royally backwards, the Japanese women are ugly, etc. etc. It's all fun and games, but, er, terribly un-PC.

It was a good book, and a fun, quick read, though quite predictable
