This might possibly be the worst mystery I have read. The main character is unbelievable and the story itself is equally so. I picked it because it was set on the Oregon coast, but setting was not enough to save it.

This book is an easy read but very entertaining. It details how students from M.I.T. figured out, with the help of a rusty old mathmetician, how to beat the game of blackjack and take Vegas for millions. Unfortunately, my book was in my backpack, which was stolen out of our rental car by some little pieces of $%^#, therefore I don't know how it ends.

"Lord knows at least I was there. And I'm here. I'm still here. Look who's here!" (insane applause.) Sadly, I was not there when the original production of Follies marked the end of what many consider the Golden Age of the Broadway musical. I recoil at such dramatic declarations, and yet...there is some truth to them. Ted Chapin was lucky enough to be a gofer/production assistant and "observer" during the rehearsal process of Follies, and thirty years later he offers this classy but juicy memoir about his experiences. Time and distance add weight to what was once a journal-turned-paper (he was a junior in college at the time), and I relished the great stories in this book from start to finish. I only wish Chapin could have written this book *after* the recent (Feb 07) concert version at City Center, which was mind-blowing. I'd love to know what he thought of it!

Trope that has been used in other romance novels, but I enjoyed it here. Jack Byron has made his living by playing cards. But this time, he's lost more than money, he's lost his bachelorhood! Grace Danvers' father is wealthy and he wants his daughter to move in the higher circles of the ton. To that end, he's trapped Jack into marriage. Jack isn't too enthusiastic about marrying an overly tall, red-head, but he soon finds that Grace has more attractive qualities. Of course, this couple has a Big Misunderstanding to overcome.

** spoiler alert ** This book is another fine novel by Michael Chabon. However, at this stage of his career I now end up comparing the reading experience to other Chabons I've read, and this is not at the top of the list. I like the story very much, the comic book industry serves as an excellent backdrop for Chabon to develop and explore the central characters of the novel. The book is at its most compelling when focused around Josef Kavalier's attempts to free his family (specifically his little brother) from the Holocaust. But Chabon does not limit his ambitions to this theme or character; instead, we are also dealing in detail with Sam Clay's coming to terms with his homosexuality and Rosa Saks's frustrated love and career path. The book sprawls over 650 pages, and I really felt ready for it to be over about 100 pages from the end. It wasn't that the plot couldn't keep the book moving along; I just reached the point where I was done with the characters far before the book ended. That's unfortunate, given the quality of the writing and the strength of the first half of the book. For my taste, the book could have been improved by tightening the work to 400 pages or so. Having said that, there's a lot of vintage Chabon here. The descriptive passages are tremendous, and he writes a humorous passage as well as any current author.

Body was bawdy and often funny, particularly the Turnipseed family; but the book strayed in directions that did not interest me. Not fatal, mind you, but not a direction I wanted to follow. The end is kind of surprising; I kept wondering where he would go. Crews is a very capable writer who paces a story well.
