Ezelle Jones ezellejone4466 — Pretty good, but was slow compared to some of her other books.

photoguy3362
Gregory Bell photoguy3362 — A fictional story written from the perspective of an autistic teenager. It appealed to me because of its glimpse into a generally incomprehensible mindset. What I took from it is that without the capacity for intuition, empathy, and love we are capable of so little.

girinath
Girinath Gopinath girinath — ** spoiler alert ** This book is another fine novel by Michael Chabon. However, at this stage of his career I now end up comparing the reading experience to other Chabons I've read, and this is not at the top of the list. I like the story very much, the comic book industry serves as an excellent backdrop for Chabon to develop and explore the central characters of the novel. The book is at its most compelling when focused around Josef Kavalier's attempts to free his family (specifically his little brother) from the Holocaust. But Chabon does not limit his ambitions to this theme or character; instead, we are also dealing in detail with Sam Clay's coming to terms with his homosexuality and Rosa Saks's frustrated love and career path. The book sprawls over 650 pages, and I really felt ready for it to be over about 100 pages from the end. It wasn't that the plot couldn't keep the book moving along; I just reached the point where I was done with the characters far before the book ended. That's unfortunate, given the quality of the writing and the strength of the first half of the book. For my taste, the book could have been improved by tightening the work to 400 pages or so. Having said that, there's a lot of vintage Chabon here. The descriptive passages are tremendous, and he writes a humorous passage as well as any current author.

mdevaney
Michael Devaney mdevaney — RATING: 3.75 CHANGELING STARS!! I enjoyed Megan Curd's tale of faeries and changelings. I liked the title of her book and the cover . The story has the unique 'Bridger', character, which I thought was very original. I did smile when Jesse and Liam came on the scene as they are my two boys names. Just a bit of a random comment thrown in this review:D This is a book about tragedy and discovery. I came across the changeling character first in Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series and then in Amanda Hocking's Trylle series. I really like reading about changelings and the writer's take on them. Ashlyn has a rocky start to her relationship with Memaw but family tragedy helps remedy that. I really liked Tess and Memaw. Both strong women. Liam is a very likeable guy and I hope Reese sticks around in future books as he is quite a character. I loved his willingness not to give up . I felt he had a great easy going personality. Antony is a crack up. When reading him I felt like he was a bit flamboyant. Maybe that's not the right word? I think I want more of him. Reuben, we are just getting to know him....oh and the recliners...ha! I don't want to be the only noodle in a bowl of fruit salad but I did have difficulty with how quickly Liam and Ashlyn's relationship exploded. I had problems wrapping my head around Liam being the 'Protector', the deal being if Ashlyn gets hurt , he suffers the same . A couple times I felt that the writing didn't show this in enough detail or the pain of it. Liam is after all only human....something just didn't 'feel' right when reading each time Ashlyn got hurt and how it was written with Liam, if that makes sense? I think sometimes I wanted the story to slow down a bit and take the time to show the reader more of Ashlyn's learning of her abilities. Sometimes I felt time jumped too quickly. Again, I have seen some wonderful reviews of this book, maybe I am the only noodle in that delicious bowl of fruit salad who hasn't given it five stars. I did enjoy Megan's tale and look forward to finding out how it all ends up.
