His humor is great. The Far Side ended too soon.

Odd. Deeply flawed. Yet, still the bard. This is considered a comedy since multiple couples are about to hop into the sack at finis and no one dies. Well, not physically. But what stays in the mind is the ugly, mutual, overwhelming, hatred of Shylock and Antonio. Surely no ha-ha there. Shylock's (relatively few) lines are amazing, the casket/flesh gimmicks gimmicky and the love plot lines all very thin indeed. Also not sure about Jessica's willingness to dump dad and steal his loot, why Portia thinks a loser like Bassanio is such a good catch or how Antonio can be such a hero (to B) and scumbag (to S) at the same time. And I'm not sure any of it can be explained away by human complexity. I think maybe it's just not a great play, but with two fascinating (Shylock/Portia) characters. Addendum: having subsequently witnessed an excellent production of Merchant and read some interesting commentary by folks far smarter than I, I felt the need to add back the star and soften some of the above. I still think the play has flaws and that some of these can't be explained by human complexity. Rather they are more in the imperfect nature of human nature, which once again WS so brilliantly explores. The production expertly brought out the importance of the homosexual attraction of Antonio and Bassanio (perhaps a bit too obviously for some tastes, but not unwarranted) and Portia's recognition of same. (Why does Antonio insist that Bassanio forfeit his wife's wedding ring?) Alas, one "message" rings out powerfully, whether the context is 16th century (or earlier) Venice or 21st century Wall St. True love is surely hard to find; hatred and a hankering for hard cash surely taint all.

Perhaps everyone who has had this on their middle school summer read list can say the same thing: that this book opened your eyes.

Without a doubt, one of my very favorite reads ever. I have to admit that I never particularly thought much about the Robin Hood story. In fact, before I read the synopsis for this book, I didn't remember the Will Scarlet character at all. But I loved, loved, loved this world and its characters. It was filled with adventure, action, heart and Scarlet's unforgettable and unique voice. And underneath all of that page-turning, there are layers and layers of truth about what it is to be a strong female and an underestimated female in society. (But don't let that scare you away, guys, because I think this book really has something for everyone). I sincerely hope there is a sequel because I can't wait to get back into this world.

Strange and interesting book. Meandering in a way that seemed ultimately purposeful. The feel of the war felt real to me and the circumstances were fascinating. Reading the dialogue from that time was altering as I continued to get captured in the co-dependency of the protagonists relationship. This is how they spoke back then?!?! Another excellent book by a favorite of mine. Of course... worth the read.

Wurtzel is a very engaging narrator...yet, I couldn't help but feel somewhat annoyed. Here's a young woman of incredible potential and priviledge who clearly is wallowing in her own weakness and misery. True, mental illness is a serious issue, however all she does is consistently whine about how she WANTS to be/do better but is incapable only in that she doesn't allow herself to be. She wrote a follow up at some point that goes into her drug habits - a fact that further annoyed me because she seems to be using her depression/self destructive behavior as a gravy train. For me, it was hard to believe in the narrative when the narrator was so irritating.

I think this book was really worth it. I really enjoyed when Luce travelled all over the world searching for answers about her past lives. I really recommend it to people that like reading love stories, this one is one of the bests.

The blurb on the book is a great summary: "A pinch of James Bond . . . a handful of humor . . . great escapist fun." The Carrie Mae Foundation philosophy is to improve the lives of women everywhere through education, medical, and financial assistance, which is financed by selling affordable, quality cosmetics. But the Foundation also has a secret arm of trained operatives who literally fight for the rights of women everywhere. Redhead Nikki Lanier, who is a horrible cosmetic saleswomen, seems like a good fit for the spy activities given her blackbelt training and linguistics background. So she is sent to the training camp in California and then on assignment to try to rescue a woman who has been kidnapped in Thailand. Like the blurb says--lots of fun humor, believable spy adventure and action with spy tools masquerading as cosmetics, and just fun escapist reading. You'll enjoy it.
