Borrowed from the public library. Read in the early 1980s. Also watched the mini series. Both are fabulous!

Charming historical fiction about a betrothed couple who go on pilgrimage in Europe in 1300. The author did a nice job conveying the history and the attitudes of the time. I particularly liked the attitudes of the two main characters, as their near hostility and fear of each other grows to friendship and affection. Unlike in much historical fiction, they don't feel like people with modern attitudes wearing old fashioned clothing.

So fun. How much of any relationship is real? This is a must for all Austen loving romantics.

When I picked up this book, quite frankly, I was scared. I'd read quite a few Stephen King books, and only one had been a dissapointment, but this one, because of a review on the back of the book, frightened me. I saw that Nicholas Sparks liked it. Great. Probably a romance. Before I gagged myself, I decided to read it found it very enjoyable. A great story about the love between a husband and wife, and the strange, and sometimes very scary things that they had to deal with. There are parts where it moves very slow, but almost always good. Not for everyone obviously, but still, great book.

I remember watching the movie Prairie Home Companion, and being surprised that what I perceived as "wholesome" was really just "small town", and coming to the realization that "small town" does not equal "clean". So not only is there a surprising bit of crude in this one, but the beginning was also very reminiscent of that movie. However, it's also got a quirky charm, and was fun enough to keep me entertained. I think one of the reasons I liked this one is because I lived in North Dakota for a handful of years, among the same people described in the book as disposed to gloom, dark Lutherans who pitch down the rocky slope of melancholy and lie there for days ... waiting for someone, usually Evelyn, to ... comfort them with dessert. A people waiting for the other shoe to drop. Phlegmatists. Stoics. Good eaters who went for recipes that start out "Brown a pound of ground beef and six strips of bacon and in a separate pan melt a pound of butter". There are also some great one-liners in this, like this one: Life is a feast and most people are starving. And then there's both the charm of more midwest descriptions as well as the combination of exasperation and love most of us feel for our families: Our people settled out on the prairie because they like straight lines and neat corners. I know these people. I'm related to some of them. And sometimes I'd like to wring their necks.

If you like a story that feels disjointed for a long time before it comes together, you will enjoy this. This book is much more than a history of love, not sure how I feel about the title. The story is filled with loss, but the friendship and survival gained from that loss keep me believing in humanity and understanding the complexity of our emotions. The story reminds me of how difficult it is to be young and old.

It has taken me forever to read this book. Not that it's not a good read. I would gobble down chunks of it at a time. It's because it was only available as an eBook and I did not have an eReader until my birthday last month. That's when my mom and my sister (who both have one) got me a Kindle. I'm starting to enjoy it. Has come in handy a few times this last month but I still LOVE real books. But I'm not here to review the Kindle, I'm here to tell you about this great book. First a little blurb about what the book is about. Discover how the Bible became the West’s source of human rights, justice, heroism, optimism, compassion, capitalism, family, and morality. In the 1960s many from the West went to the East in search of spiritual wisdom. The Book That Made Your World reverses the journey. Vishal Mangalwadi, an Indian philosopher, takes readers on a historical journey through the last millennium, exploring why and how the Bible reformed Europe and made the West a uniquely thinking civilization: technical and tolerant, scientific and free, just and prosperous. Readers will learn: Why an American president puts his hand on the Bible to take the oath of a secular office What forced British monarchs from Henry VIII to James I to submit to the Bible’s authority Why Bible translators Wycliffe, Luther, and Tyndale became history’s greatest revolutionaries How the Bible globalized western education A learned man who was raised in Indian culture, telling the world how the Bible has made it what it is today. It's an extremely powerful and uplifting book to read. He gives the facts, he shares personal stories, and he makes it an enjoyable read. One of my favorite quotes is, "Postmodern people see little point in reading books that do not contribute directly to their career or pleasure." Which I believe makes for a sad state of affairs in this world. You need to learn about the world you are living in and where it came from in order to know where it's going. Reading the challenges that the Bible has gone through in order to get into the hand of every person on this planet is amazing (and still on going). The effect the Bible has had on people explains so much about the world around us. As the Bible has been translated and placed into the hands of the common man, we have realized that we can think for ourselves and that there is something better for us out there if only we Ask, Seek, and Knock. I cannot explain as completely and eloquently as Mr Mangalwadi has. So go out and get yourself a copy and read for yourself how the Bible has changed the world. And then go and grab a copy of the Bible and see how it can change you.
