i love, love LOVED this story of carter's freshman year of high school. he's one of the most realistic and adorably flawed male characters i've come across in a while, and hilarious to boot. carter learns a lot about himself, life, and relationships during his mishap-laden year, but the book doesn't come off as even remotely preachy. it's a bit outlandish, but not to the point of 'youth in revolt' (which sort of frightened me, to be honest.) highly recommended. may brent crawford write many more gems like this one.

Brilliant. I especially liked Dumbledore's footnotes. Being such an important figure in the series, it's nice to read a little from his perspective. In fact, along that same line, it would be interesting to read a biography or autobiography of Dumbledore. That would really be brilliant.

A dark and disturbing glimpse into the depths of poverty in the 30s and 40s in Limerick, Ireland yet also an inspirational and moving story of a family who no matter the hardships they must endure never loses the hope of a better life.

I just said infidelity turns me off a main character, but luckily there were a lot of main characters in this book. They really breathed, too.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this book! It was amazing on so many levels!! I literally have a whole new understanding of the Atonement and am so grateful for the understanding I have gleaned from The Peacegiver! This is truly a remarkable book that ALL should definitely read! A fabulous book on forgiveness and repentance to help everyone, no matter their situation. A few of my favorite things from the book... "Christ will take the sins of people who have hurt us upon His head, and extends us the same mercy. Christ will deal with any dealing that needs to be done. We can LET IT GO and let Christ take it." "Remember three things... *Christ took upon his own head the sins of those who have wronged us. *Because of this, He stands between us and those whom we think have wronged us, asking us to realize that the Atonement is sufficient for those sins; and to therefore repent of our grudges and give up our enmity. *If we forgive, the Atonement fills us with what we have lacked and either washes away our pain or sustains us in it." "We are all each of us equally damned without the mercy of our Lord. Eternal Life is a gift. We have no cause to feel entitled. We have cause only to feel GRATEFUL!!" "You discover LOVE by learning to love others, there is no other way! "Righteousness is just a humble understanding of how unrighteous one is coupled with a deep commitment to be better! The truth leaves no room for feelings of superiority."

When Philip Noble's father dies, he has trouble adjusting even before his mother starts dating his uncle and he begins to see his father's ghost. Plot sound a bit familiar? It should, as author Matt Haig has taken as his jumping off point the bare bones of Shakespeare's Hamlet. However, it is what he does with those bones that makes this a truly enjoyable read. In his eleven-year old protagonist, Haig has created one of the most authentic voices in recent memory. It amazed me that an adult can so clearly remember (or mimic) how one felt and acted and talked as a child, but Haig does this amazingly well. Philip is obviously grieving for his father and resents the changes that his father's death cause in his life. Not the least of these changes is that his uncle moves in and starts dating his mother. When Philip starts to see visions of his dead father that tell him to avenge his death, we know he is in troubled waters. The questions surrounding the death of Philip's father add an element of mystery to the book. In a way, this echoed The Curious Case of the Dog in the Night-time for me, both for its family relations and pseudo-mystery to be solved. Philip is like a non-autistic version of that book's hero, Christopher Boone. Paying homage to Hamlet without being boxed in by a rigid retelling, Dead Father's Club is a great book.
