Very interesting book....feels like you learn a lot in this book about Harry and his past.

Listened to the book on CD. The reader was wonderful - a fascinating story about a not-very-likeable protagonist that you still want to read! Mild spoiler: the movie with Edward Norton and Naomi Watts, while very good, tinkered with the ending a bit.

Man, if I could drop a 3.75 bomb on this tome, I'd do it for sure. It was pretty uninteresting until the last quarter of the book when suddenly, Pamuk becomes this engaging, web-spinning, insect-sucking spider of a novelist. I just mean that it gets good at the end. Pamuk describes things exceptionally evocatively and in the case of 'Snow,' it is actually quite beautifully executed. Maybe some people get dragged down in the descriptions (my coworker did, but she read it in Turkish) but they are worth the effort. Pamuk also manages to take on a number of themes and incorporates a huge number of personalities in this book. So while the book is set in Kars, a forgotten provincial town on the end of the world (or the edge of Turkey,) a huge assortment of characters pass in and out of the book. I guess you could sort of tell that this guy Pamuk is a great writer (won the Nobel Prize... ehh.. maybe that was a stretch and then again, maybe not. I'm just not sure what a Nobel writer is like... Anyway, I digress) and it was definitely a good read... but... I just feel like somethings don't come together for a full 4 stars. (In my personal ranking system, five stars = life-changing.)

As an avid fan of Stephen King I have to say that I was taken aback by this book. There is very little, if at all, supernatural elements to this story, and that's what makes it work. It is a continuous unbroken monologue from the title character that details the events leading up to the murder of her husband. It's chilling because all of the scenarios are entirely plausible. I was wary at first because the book is told entirely in dialect, as spoken word, and I was not sure if it could sustain almost 400 pages. Luckily this really helped immerse me in the characters and brought the entire experience to life. I have never read a book before that was written entirely in this style, and after reading it I am curious to try something of the sort. The main thing i pulled away, as a writer, is how and when to implement dialects. If used incorrectly this could have read like a really poorly spelled book, but instead King seems to capture the essence of the small town America, and how these people actually speak

** spoiler alert ** I got ored about half way and opted not to finish. I think the story was interesting, but it got so bogged down in the local politics that I found it dreary. To the author's credit, the story was all about the local politics and how the police boggled a serial killer murder investigation. My attention span just could keep up.

I'm a big fan of Mr. Bourdain, as he became known to me through his television food-travel show No Reservations. He's funny, edgy, smart. So when I learned he wrote a couple books, I went straight to this one. I think having watched the show and knowing the cant and sound of his voice and his personality helped. I felt, more than most books, like he was narrating the book to me. I guess you normally don't know what the author's actual voice sounds like, or maybe they're usually not so distinctive. The first half of the book was great, telling his rise into the restaurant world, and really letting you in on the underbelly of how the restaurant world works. The latter half I found meandering and repetitive and well, generally uninteresting, as he gets lost in countless war stories and anecdotes about particular restaurant buddies and it all kind of runs together. I'm just not interested in these people. I wanted to know about the restaurant industry, not about your friend Joey the really good sous chef. Though the chapter on his trip to Japan in the latter half caught my attention again. Overall, a good read, but if you only make it halfway through, you can know that you got the full thing.

I am a big fan of the movie. Probably one of my top three favorites of all time. The book reads just like the movie and none of the humor is lost in it. I was surprised how similar they are. The book was written so long ago. The only down fall is the long chapters that drag on about what Buttercup plans to wear and things like that. I guesss that sort of stuff was a big deal back when this was written.

After an attack by something straight out of a nightmare Mary wakes up in a strange bed, in a strange place with people she has never seen in her life. These people begin to tell her of her birthright, which entails a vastly different life than she ever imagined possible. A life filled with shifters, gnomes, imps and vamps. In this new life she is Keena Priestess of the Wild, a Witch and her home is on the hidden island of WildLand. Keena’s new friends and family begin to train her for the trials that an extremely old prophecy has spoken of. Keena will have to fight magically and physically to obtain the throne and title for High Priestess. Sounds really exciting right, well that’s just the tip of the excitement iceberg. Keena has a short few months to learn how the fight and defend herself against her opponents. She also has to become more comfortable as a Witch and forget her human feeling about casual sex. Keena not only needs the sexual contact of others to fully come into her Witch powers but her Witch powers also needs the power exchange of other magical beings. Birthright is written in first person from Keena’s point of view. I loved Keena. She evolves from a human who always knew she was different to an incredibly strong Witch. For Keena to obtain the High Priestess throne and title she must battle her twin Feldema in the Battle of Birthright. Feldema was spoiled from the time she came to WildLand. The member of the Kith believed that she was the stronger of the twins. After all she was with them and had her full magical abilities long before anyone ever found Keena. Feldema does everything one can possibly imagine an evil twin doing and then some. The fight for the throne adds an enormous amount of tension to this book. The suspense of what obstacle is going to be tossed at Keena next left me on the edge of my seat as I was eagerly turning pages. The romance! I mentioned already that Keena needed the sexual exchange of powers with others. In the world that this book is set in there are no taboos about multiple partners in fact it is expected. Keena being raised as a human has some issues with casual sex with multiple partners. She does find herself not only attracted to but drawn on a primal level to Tynan and Jordan. Tynan is a Vampire Lord and Jordan is the half Demon head of security. The romance is hot. Keena can’t just fall into bed with these two. Her human side wants the connection, the passion and the loving relationship. The connection that she has with the two men is amazing. I loved the way her Witch nature heightened the connection. There is an interesting happily ever after with Birthright. Keena gets two sexy men. It’s not ménage. The three are never together at the same time. I just want to warn someone who may not be interested in this nature of happily ever after.

Oh my gosh. This book was so good. I loved the mystery. I loved that little Aurora recovered and totally gets busy with someone new and buys a new house. also, here's what I think i really love about this series: it's kind of real-life. I mean, each book covers a few days or maybe a week's worth of events, but from book to book, years pass. That's neat. It makes the characters and their lives and issues more believable. Love it.

I loved this book. I always so surprised when I love a book by a first time author. Perkins-Valdez had it all: easy to read writing style, believable characters and an interesting story line.
