Dissolution is set in Tudor England as the monasteries were being broken up and their wealth taken by King Henry. The year is 1537, and the country is divided between those faithful to the Catholic Church and those loyal to the king and the newly established Church of England. When a royal commissioner is brutally murdered in a monastery on the south coast of England, Thomas Cromwell sends a hunchback attorney, Matthew Shardlake to investigate and find out who did it. Matthew brings a young aide with him. The monks are not all saintly, it is an interesting description of inside of a monastery at that time, and of the town/monastery relationship. I did not guess the killer at all. This is the first of a series containing Matthew Shardlake. The historical background is very accurate, the author has researched the time period extensively.

Some very funny ideas--one main character very unlikable, but suspect that was the point.

This is rated two-and-a-half mostly because it got a little draggy once they were back in Europe. But that is the nature of what they're going through - waiting on the field for orders and a battle. And of course I found Iskierka adorable, although if you're not fond of strong-willed children, I can see where she might get on your nerves.

[Ahead there be spoilers:] Having heard the gist of this book beforehand, I was surprised that I did not like it all that much. I expected to side fully with Emma Bovary, the supposedly brave woman stuck in an unfulfilling marriage who decides to strike out and get her jollies elsewhere. I slowly realized I had been led astray in her characterization, and came to despise her. She was not brave, nor feminist, nor bad-ass in the least. First of all, she is a snivelling, simpering phony with completely ridiculous rainbows-and-unicorns ideas of what love and romance should be. No wonder she was unsatisfied! I could barely stand to read when she launched into her "romantic" tirades with her loverboys, begging them to tell her how wonderful she was and acting the stereotypical weak, helpless woman. In addition, it did not appear to me that she initiated these affairs willingly; it seemed more like she had to be cajoled into them, and once she was in them, it was only because there was nothing better to do. Feminist crusader, indeed! I guess there were a few bright spots in the book that warranted a 2-star rating, though. Monsieur Homais's cynical rants. Emma observing how ugly her child was. The infamous cab ride through Rouen (which, Dave Barry insists, is pronounced "woon"). And, of course, Emma's fabulously drawn-out, agonizing death by self-inflicted arsenic ingestion. I had been rooting for her to off herself for quite awhile at that point, and was seriously worried that she had grabbed the wrong jar of white powder out of Monsieur Homais's closet. (I was also rooting for her to degrade herself by selling her body to Monsieur Guillaumin, but alas, we can't win them all.) In the end, disappointing. I had really been hoping to like it, especially since Kate Winslet's character in Little Children gave it a glowing review after her second reading of it; I thought her character was awesome and I respected her viewpoint. Maybe I'll have to read it a second time too...when I'm older, more disillusioned, and my husband has a secret porn addiction.

one story i admire much from this book is the story about one who were being asked to see around in one big castle while holding a candle in his hand. well, what i got is, we still have to see the beauty of life in any situation. and the wonderful quote: "One is loved because one is loved. No reason is needed for loving." (Fatima to Santiago)

This gentle read is a gem. Especially in this hi-tech era, it's a pleasure to read a book written in the form of long-hand letters between gentle people. There are no abbreviations or email slang. A book about perspectives from survivors of World War II I would definitely recommend.

Book Basics Title: Stork Author: Wendy Delsol Published October 12th 2010 by Candlewick Format Read: Borrowed from the library Number of pages: 357 Book Stats Setting: Minnesota A Few of the Characters: • Katla Lablanc – A 16 year old fashionista pulled from her hip and cool school in LA to the middle of nowhere Minnesota after her parents’ divorce. Not only is she the new girl, but she discovers a few family secrets, unwillingly becomes the member of a secret magical society, and is drawn to a mysterious guy named Jack • Jack Snjosson – A guy (Minnesota Native) surrounded by mystery who claims to know Katla, however she has no recollection of him… • Wade Ivarsson – Popular, but creepy, guy who is up to no good • Hulda – The leader of The Icelandic Stork Society and mentor to Katla Author Website: http://www.wendydelsol.com/ Summary From Goodreads: Family secrets. Lost memories. And the arrival of an ancient magical ability that will reveal everything. Sixteen-year-old Katla LeBlanc has just moved from Los Angeles to Minnesota. As if it weren’t enough that her trendy fashion sense draws stares, Katla soon finds out that she’s a Stork, a member of a mysterious order of women tasked with a very unique duty. But Katla’s biggest challenge may be finding her flock at a new school. Between being ignored by Wade, the arrogant jock she stupidly fooled around with, and constantly arguing with gorgeous farm boy and editor-in-chief Jack, Katla is relieved when her assignment as the school paper’s fashion columnist brings with it some much-needed friendship. But as Homecoming approaches, Katla uncovers a shocking secret about her past — a secret that binds her fate to Jack’s in a way neither could have ever anticipated. With a nod to Hans Christian Andersen and inspired by Norse lore, Wendy Delsol’s debut novel introduces a hip and witty heroine who finds herself tail-feathers deep in small-town life. What made me keep turning the page? • Katla’s personality • Trying to figure out Jack • The unique story (there wasn’t a werewolf or vampire to be found!) • The lore and mystery connected to The Icelandic Stork Society Any complaints? • Nope, I loved it! Recommendation: • Young Adult/Fantasy Readers Final Thoughts… I was drawn to this book by its cover. My to be read pile is so high, the last thing I needed was another book, but I couldn’t resist when I saw it displayed at the library. Katla was a great witty main character. The story was interesting and unique, and I just wanted to keep reading to find out what happened and what the deal was with Jack! I am so excited to see that this is the first of a trilogy, and the second book Frost is coming out in the Fall. I give this book 4 out of 4 worms!

It started off great then it got really corny. What a waste of $10.
