A beautifully descriptive first novel from a young author. A love story about the loss of sight and how to make up for that in imagination. This book is elegant and lovely, although the ending broke my heart in its abrupt apathy. The "machine" doesn't make its appearance until three-quarters through the book, and really, doesn't have much to do with the story. The love between Carolina and her scientist is what draws the reader gently through the Italian countryside in this story. Great read, disappointing ending.

To begin with I found this book, whilst very informative and interesting, to be slow. It has been a while since I've not wanted to pick up a book and read it, yet that was what happened with 'The Book Thief'. . . until around page 355 that is (which is a shame in itself really, over half of the book I had no desire to read yet carried on plowing through it). I liked that the book was narrated by Death as it is something that I've not encountered before and I found it be rather enlightening, and I enjoyed when the little breaks in narration would happen and you would experienced some Death insights. Even after having read this book, I can't decide if I liked the overall plot or not. Yes, it was different to see the other side of Nazi Germany but the characters (especially Rosa and Hans) didn't have enough depth to them. In fact Rudy was probably my favourite character in the entire book and I enjoyed his antics (teared up a little both when he gave the teddy bear to the dying British pilot and when he himself died, if I'm being honest). I'm not sure if I would read this book again but I would happily recommend it for somebody else to read.

I'd like to give this a 2.5. It was a little better than ok, but I'm not sure I liked it... I'll read another, I think, just because sometimes a series takes a couple of titles to really get going. This definitely isn't as good as Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series, but we'll see.

i very much enjoyed verghese's two previous nonfiction books, and was blown away by this novel. lots of neat "side" information about ethiopa, medicine, etc., etc., but the story never stops. wow.

Not bad. Not bad at all. It reminded me why I used to adore Kelley Armstrong. She won me over completely with "Bitten" then lost me with the rest of her books. She's begun winning me over again. I may have to give the other ones a second go. I love Derek!!!!

Really good - a light, undemanding read for girls. Extremely funny and uplifting moments for anyone who has put up with others' children, looked after their own, had their heart broken, or got a bit fat.

It's 1806 in the small village of Wiscasset, Maine, and eleven-year-old Abbie Chambers and her four-year-old brother, Seth, are on their own. Their mother has just died, and they haven't heard from their father, a sailor, in years. Abbie takes a position helping the young wife of Captain Chase, an ailing sea captain, on the condition that her brother be given a home there as well, so that he will not have to be sent to an orphanage. When the sea captain dies, the Widow Chase is left alone with no income and a baby on the way. Abbie and Seth are dependent on Widow Chase, but in a way, she is dependent on them, too. This book was a heartwarming historical novel about a girl's struggle after her mother's death to keep her brother with her against all odds, that I recommend to readers who enjoy middle grade historical fiction.

I like the idea of a short story providing a little back story for fans and not interfering with the story arc for those who read only the novels of the series. This episode from Jack Reacher's childhood was an interesting look into the family dynamic, but Reacher did not think or talk like a thirteen-year-old. I imagine that was intentional, but it wasn't believable.

Couldn't put this thriller down! It's right up there with The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo!
