ztburian0721
Zachary Burian ztburian0721 — ** spoiler alert ** As the first volume of a 7 book series, this novella at first seems to be a bit on the light side, but closer reading reveals considerable depth, depth that isn't necessarily immediately apparent, and maybe isn't really obvious until you've read more about the Drakes. There are some hints here of things we'll see (or probably see - not having read most of the series yet, I couldn't say at this point for sure) in the later books about Sarah's sisters. But while this novella does well at setting the stage for what will eventually be a much larger story no doubt, still it doesn't lose it's primary focus of Sarah and Damon's budding relationship. While much about who they are and what they do is left rather vague, we still get to know them fairly well as people, so the details of how they make (or made in Damon's case) their living don't seem all that important really. While we're told that Sarah is a "security specialist", a position with apparently involves SWAT team/assassin/spy type training as well as knowledge of physical/electronic security systems, what she does isn't ever defined very clearly, and the few glimpses we are shown of Sarah acting as the trained professional she apparently is seem to be rather out of sync with the slightly mysterious, definitely soft-hearted woman that we shown most of the time. One thing that seems to be largely missing in this novella is serious conflict. True, they are having to deal with a team of kidnappers/assassins that are looking to finish what they started with Damon several months or more before the story started, but their few encounters with them are all fairly brief and generally quickly and relatively easily resolved, and since the mood of the story is predominately light-hearted and happy, it's difficult to feel too much suspense or tension about the hitmen. Furthermore, they are external to the main couple here - Sarah and Damon never have even a minor quarrel with each other, let alone any real conflicts between them, and while that adds to the rather fairy-tale, fated-to-be nature that Ms. Feehan obviously intended for their relationship, it also makes their romance seem a bit less real, because real couples do have at least occassional disagreements, even if only over relatively inconsequential things like what to have for dinner. Most likely Sarah and Damon will have their fair share of those kind of minor spats, but it would have been nice to seem them do more than simply gaze besottedly into each others eyes when they're together (when they weren't busy fending off inept hitmen or engaging in serious liplock or other more intense physical activities - and speaking of such, shouldn't their intense bedroom sessions have been kind of physically challenging for him with his bad hip? And yet nothing is said of there being any physical issues for him while making love to her...) Now, a lot of what I've said above may seem negative toward this book, but it's certainly not my intent to give it a bad review overall - on the contrary, I've given it a full four stars because I think it is an excellent book, and certainly makes me interested in reading more about the Drake Sisters and the things they can do. Most of the issues I have with it are truly minor, and most of them are mostly likely due to the fact that this is just a novella, not a full novel, and so Ms. Feehan of course had to be rather more brief about some things than she might have been in a longer page count work. For fans of witches, or of paranormal romances, or both, this book will be well worth your time to read, as, I suspect, the whole series will be.

Lori Visa xxx1234 — Sllllooooowwwww. Could not identify with the main character. Didn't really like any of the characters. The main character was obsessed with trying to change everyone into her way of thinking and life. She was throwing a pity party for herself most of the book.

Casey Goulet caseygoulet — The Widow’s Walk League Author: Nancy Lynn Jarvis Reviewed by Fran Lewis Death believe it or not has it’s own datebook. Would you believe he is allowing his victims to prepare for their demise by handing out slips of typewritten papers on Halloween night to inform them of their impending demise? Susan and Walter appeared to be happily married on the surface so did Linda and Mike. So, why target these two men as victims one and two. Why were they on Death’s list.? In the midst of all of the excitement of Halloween Susan and Walter Henshaw were enjoying their evening when someone came out nowhere and stabbed him to death. The scary part is he/she was hiding in plain sight wearing a Death costume. So, how did this elusive killer get away? Before he died Walter expressed that his feelings to the killer. Disbelief, horror and more must have gone through his mind when he realized the date and the time on the paper he thought he discarded correctly recorded when he would die. Linda and Mike were attending a Woodies on the Wharf when his car was tampered with and he became victim number two. Now, Olive, a concerned friend has an unusual request of both new widows. She insists that they begin the process of selling their homes and investing in her home at Woods Cove for widow’s only. Let’s see how did she put it so bluntly. She is the first widow these two are the second and third and only two more to go to fill up the need for five in all. Odd, don’t you think yet who knows maybe she is just being a good friend or maybe not! Regan McHenry and her husband Tom own a real estate company. Tom Kiley, her husband seems to be the object of Olive’s time, affection and little token gifts. Hoping that he will expedite the sale of both homes so these women can move into hers and of course fund some of the expenses, she showers him with compliments, gifts and too much attention. Owning Woods Cove a strictly widow’s community, it is her goal to get these women to help finance some the much needed improvements before they even move in. She is once sly fox. Dave, is the police officer in charge of the investigation and Regan has become a sort of amateur sleuth who has gotten involved in helping to solve other murders in Santa Cruz and of course she will not bow out of giving her take on these. Observant, smart and definitely on the mark she relates to both Dave and Tom her observations about Olive, her feelings about how she knew certain things before begin told and what she really thinks about the wives of the two murder victims. Could they be guilty? Forming the Widow’s Walk League to find houses that have what she deems a widow’s walk, Olive is relentless in getting women to join these walks, find what looks like a widow’s walk and go to lunch afterwards. But, what is her real motive and why does she insist that both Susan and Linda rush the sales of their homes and why don’t they resist her? There is much more to learn as Death has definitely not taken a holiday as yet and there is much more to come. Death came back with a vengeance as he now killed Mike Linda’s husband and next Charlie Smith Tika’s. But, there has to be some connection since Tika, Susan and Olive all have nursing degrees but Tika has an unusual background that she reveals to Regan which set the ball rolling in an entire different direction. Just why Charlie was killed might not have anything to do with the Mike and Walter’s deaths. But, what Tika reveals information to Regan about her past which will either endear you to her or make you even more suspicious. Olive claiming on one hand that she needs money to make the necessary repairs for her community. Where she gets these funds I cannot divulge. Olive seems to be the link that binds all of these new widows and appears to have a strong hold over each one of them for different reasons. So, would a séance really help Tika learn who killed Charlie and much more: Where is all the money buried that he might not have given to the FBI? Just what is Olive’s real role in all of this? Who caused her to break her vows to Paul and what did he die from? This is only the beginning, as the body count still needs to rise by two more. Three deaths and she needs to fill five places in her development. Who is next? As the group assembles for the séance and Helen leaves Henry outside to nap by the pool, the spirit guide begins and then something happens that would add to the list of murdered victims as Joyce sees Death through a thin curtain and they find body number four. As the newest widow needs to be consoled and the police are told the facts what will finally stop Death in his/her tracks? Who will profit from so many deaths? More information comes to the forefront and Regan begins to see Olive in a whole new light, the police consider her a person of interest after she volunteers important information related to the murders. Olive is excited about becoming a suspect. What they learn from Olive and what she reveals changes the direction of the investigation. Why does Regan begin to believe that Olive is just unstable, a prankster and not a murderer? Could her judgment be off? Does Olive get an academy award for great acting? The author compares her to Ted Bundy? Creative and good analogy but is this really how we should perceive Olive? Could Olive be vying for attention because she is lonely since losing her husband and feels she failed him before his death? Tom and Regan discuss the case after Tika reveals more about her past and Regan reveals what she did not reveal to the police or Tom about her conversation with her. Why does Tom think Olive is not what she appears to be? Why would Olive go to such extremes on Halloween night to create these pranks, scare people and even be part of the reason people saw Death? Why was she behind the notes? What information did Tika reveal to Regan that links her even more to Olive? Why was Charlie killed and who was he really? As the author reveals the back-stories of Susan, Linda, Tika and Olive we learn of one common thread. Some of them worked together during the Gulf War, but not Linda. Olive was even adept at car repair which led to Mike, Linda’s husband’s death. Why were all of these women so loyal to Olive and want to be part of her Widow’s community? These and many other questions still remain unanswered as author Nancy Lynn Jarvis takes the reader further into the minds of the women, allowing us to learn more about them, their true pasts and their inner most thoughts in a very creative and well thought out way keeping reader interest throughout this intriguing novel. The suspects mount up and the body count has finally stopped but the killer is not done yet as Regan learns that Olive is free on bail and then what happens next will not only put her in danger, cause two women to struggle for their lives and an ending filled with surprises that you won’t expect. Truths are told, affairs admitted, lives changes and one killer revealed as Death meets his/her match when the final mask is removed. Who was behind the murders and why did each of these four men have to die? Lies told, lies revealed, some friends unite and others don’t as this unique blend of mystery, murder, mayhem and humor brings the people of Santa Cruz and one police detective into the path of those that belong to the Widow’s League Walk Group. Who’s left to continue on and walk? Read this outstanding novel and find out for yourself? This reviewer is ready for Regan’s next adventure. Do we have another Jessica Fletcher, Agatha Christie or Inspector Morse? No! We have unique, creative and well-crafted sleuth named Regan Henry. Fran Lewis: reviewer

stevencarrillo
Steven Carrillo stevencarrillo — I like the idea of a short story providing a little back story for fans and not interfering with the story arc for those who read only the novels of the series. This episode from Jack Reacher's childhood was an interesting look into the family dynamic, but Reacher did not think or talk like a thirteen-year-old. I imagine that was intentional, but it wasn't believable.
