I'm moving this book to the read shelf, even though I will openly admit I have not read the entire thing word for word. it is quickly becoming a reference book, which for me means i will pull it off the shelf often and see if the subject matter informs my particular study at the time. A good book, but I sense a lack of passion. Not that it is not there, but the energy of the authors solo works does not translate here. A good book, but nothing I haven't heard each man say elsewhere.

This is probably the most famous of a rash of book written in the mid twentieth century containing a very pessimistic view of the future. In this tale, Orwell conceives of a society in which the people are under constant control and surveillance by "big brother." The TVs in people's houses cease to be modes of entertainment and become propaganda machines for the state, a state which conjures up wars in order to keep the people in submission. The only way that one breaks out is to hide from the TVs and express themselves freely, which in this case, means sexually. This is another thinly veiled critique of communism, and while it is probably exaggerated, much of what 1984 predicts, I think, occurs in places like China.

J.L. Bourne has done it again. The sequel to Day by Day Armageddon picks up with our hero in an underground military base when a distress call from an army squad trapped near the city leads him back into the fray. Bourne does an excellent job of amping up the difficulty for his protagonist in this one, forcing him out of the comfort of a base and again exploring the thrill of survival out in the zombie wasteland. In the process, Bourne introduces stronger zombies in larger numbers, some demented survivors, and a secret organization that has a very strange motivation at keeping him alive. Bourne’s knowledge of cutting edge weapons, military tactics and overall survival basics makes him the perfect author for this story. He ramps up the weaponry, but also the stakes as he finds a way to increase the threat from both living and undead to make our hero’s life even harder than last time. The end of the book sets up the next installment with great anticipation as we discover the origin of the zombie plague and the trial our hero will have to endure to help find the cure.

I've loved science fiction my whole life, but I was finally told that I couldn't call myself a SF fan if I hadn't read Dune. So I read it. I know Dune is worshipped as a paragon of groundbreaking SF, I can witness and acknowledge Herbert's genius, and I can understand that when it was written it was certainly seminal, but I still don't think much of it. Aside from Herbert's horribly annoying use of 3rd-person-omnipotent viewpoint, he's just not a good writer. For clarification: he's a fantastic story-teller and creator. He has an incredible imagination and a talent for world-building and interweaving complex storylines. But the actual craft of writing, well, he just can't write worth 2 beans. As a result, I found Dune nearly impossible to get through. Story-wise, I got bored with all the political stuff because it's not my thing, and I got bored with all the preaching about ecology. But I loved the elements that dealt more closely with the human drama, the personal choices characters make, their interactions with others, how they cope internally with themselves and their own strengths and weaknesses. Those are the stories I like. There was enough of that here to make me check out the sequel from the library, but after about 10 pages of Herbert's writing I just couldn't stomach any more.

Rating: 8/10 Best non-storyline part: The monologue given by Sam about what she "believes in" or is "capable of believing" Worst non-storyline part: Some very graphic intimate sections. All-in-all: A great book! A couple sections were too graphic for my taste, but not enough of a turn-off to outweigh a great story, and Gaiman's always superb writing.

I can understand why this book was on the "most philosophical" list. Written by an unidentified character, the first half is part Dostoevsky's personal philosophy, part personal dissing of his philosophical enemies. The notes in the Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky translation are excellent and I don't recommend reading any other versions. I've read their translations of Brothers, Crime and Punishment, and The Idiot and all were excellent. Their notes are crucial for understanding the context for many of Dostoevsky's 1860's references which are quite funny actually. The second half is a story which alludes to the philosophies explored in the first half. The unidentified narrator is one of Dostoevsky's more interesting characters and quite possibly his most unlikeable. In short, there were times where one can both identify and despise with him.
