The Shakespeare Stealer trilogy by Gary Blackwood is a lot of fun. Widge is an orphan living in Shakespearian England, and his skill at shorthand gets him thrown in with the company of actors that does their thing at the Globe theatre (I’ve been there, whoo!). Various adventures ensue, with Widge ultimately becoming a full-fledged member of the company and a burgeoning playwright. The cast of actors at the Globe are quite likeable, Shakespeare himself was fun to see, and Widge, with his endearing Northern accent is a fairly strong protagonist. The references to Shakespeare’s plays are many (Widge even helps to write a few) and the uneven style of Timon of Athens is explained. Each of the three books are quick reads, and they are each a lot of fun.

This book, was one of the most influential books that I've read in a long time. I purchased it, after getting an email with a story that was in the book, and spent all evening reading it, unable to put it down. The title of the book, Blink is a descriptive word to describe the whole idea behind the theory that the author presents; which is thinking spotaneously, but also trusting our instinctual thoughts and feelings, which individuals tend to second-guess in certain life situations. With the patients that I work with, many times there is a misconception in regards to their instinctual decisions, such as whether to relapse and use negative substances. I've begun to work with my patients who are struggling to think for themselves when re-defining decisions and choices in their lives, and this book has assisted me in doing this! I would totally reccommend this book, and would even venture to purchasing copies for anyone that would desire to read it. It is one of the best books I've ever read!

THIS is why I am glad I joined the Sporadic Book Group.I never would have read or even picked up this book without Deborah's suggestion. It is interesting, disturbing, and enchanting. And what fun to be a grownup reading a book with pictures, not photographs that truly illustrate the tales. And I suspect Suburbia ends exactly the way it is depicted in the book, the fast food joints just run out... I withhold a star #1- It is too short and #2- I like books of short stories that have a stronger thread connecting them. Shaun Tan's Oscar this year for a short animated film was well-deserved. Kind of thinking he won't care about the withheld star....

Okay, I had the opportunity to meet Emily Giffin at Southern Voices weekend before last. She is a delightful young woman who is excited about this being turned into a movie due out on my friend, Carol's birthday..May 6th. We will make this a time to enjoy a movie event. I loved hearing Emily speak. She is charming and fun to listen to. So I bought this book and the second one...Something Blue. Her writing isn't terrible, but and I say but with much reservation....PLEASE.....these characters are very shallow people. Maybe that is her point....very shallow and sad people who spend 100 percent of their time wishing they were in bed with Mr. right, sleeping around, drinking to get drunk and then hating their jobs. What a terrible life.....obviously there is no religion, faith, thought, in these characters brains. So, then I began thinking, maybe she is striking on one tiny facit of a human life to sell a book. But, how sad these people appear. I tried to read this thinking I needed something outside of my age group to see what 20-30 somethings might enjoy reading. This will be a very easy book to put the entire script into a movie......lots of in bed scenes, lots of bar scenes and possibly a bar scene in London too. Oh yes, it is about RELATIONSHIPS.... a mini version of Sex in the City. So, there, I don't know what else to think about it. I read it....I liked meeting Emily much better than reading her book.

Awful book. Poorly researched, badly written, devoid of any scholarly merit. Maybe, if you absolutely must read something for a couple of minutes in the bathroom, read this. Otherwise, don't waste the money or the energy.

It took me awhile to work up the energy to start this book, but once I did I couldn't put it down. It is beautifully written and impossible not to connect with the characters. You really feel what they are feeling. High high high recommendation for this book to anyone. It is simply fantastic.

I saw this book mentioned in the Book Review of the New York Times a few weeks ago and ordered it from my local library. It sounded like the perfect book to read while in our summer rental cottage on the lake, especially since I'd be visited by a friend from Catholic school days and this book was about a group of friends who went to Catholic school together. Unfortunately my expectations were not really met -- it was only ok. I could have done without the crime element that wasn't really that well developed but was there interspersed between the more interesting stories of these girlfriends getting together for a month on the beach. So, it was an "ok" summer read but overall disappointing.
