I found this hard to get through. Mostly because of Barrons. He such a jerk through the whole book. The only thing that saved it was Mac. I will keep reading the series because of her. She keeps the color in the story. My favorite part is at the end when she makes Barrons paint her finger nails because her arm is broken.

Never in a million years would I imagine Jimi Hendrix to be the subject of a children's picture book, but strangely enough, this was quite an inspiring piece of writing. Gary Golio tells the story of a young Jimi Hendrix and what sparked his passion for learning guitar how he became such a legend. Told through vivid writing and mixed-media illustrations, this picture book is a must-have for any budding guitarist. Nowhere in the actual story itself does the author address Jimi's substance abuse issues, choosing instead to keep the tone of the story inspirational, but there is quite an thorough author's note at the end that addresses how Jimi died and lists quite a few resources that explain the dangers of substance abuse. Anyone who admires Hendrix as a rock 'n' roll legend cannot overlook the tragic way in which he died, so it's unfortunate that this can't be a book about what inspired Hendrix to become a great guitarist and leave it at that.

I've always wanted to read this book, but you have to be in the right mood to tackle this material. I finally found myself in a willing spirit, and then my determination to finish this book before I die carried me through. My thoughts are as follows: 1 - Why is Thoreau so whiny?! Seriously. 2 - Why is Thoreau such a jerk? (I would use stronger language here, but I'll refrain.) A lot of his arguments for living the way he did for 2 years fell flat since they went kind of like this: "I live better than you. You know why? Cause I do. And I'd know because I'm a philosopher and that means I think about stuff better than you think about stuff." Whatever. I rolled my eyes a lot. I know people who talk like this in real life, and I don't like those people. 3 - There are kernels of wisdom in here. They weren't worth a book-length read. 4 - He obviously has a much higher regard for himself and his writing skills than I do. I don't like it when an author's arrogance shows through. It's hard for me to stomach. Having said all that, I like the experiment he ran. I like the minutiae, the isolation, the love of Nature, all of that. I just wasn't as into it as he was. In fact, it made me realize that although I'm one to celebrate the simplicity of someone's life and look for the small things, there's a point where minutiae becomes tedium. So you can go ahead and skip this book. In fact, I'd recommend that. I had much more love for Thoreau before reading Walden than after. And that's a shame.

LOVE LOVE Interview with a Vampire and The Tale of the body Theif... the rest... got to be alittle too much. I should have stopped after Body theif.
An excellent reference.

3.5 stars is my my true rating. It was enjoyable, lovable, and easy to read. I am grateful for an "adult" book without all the "adult" language. The thing keeping me from rating it higher is that it didn't pull me in to where I HAD to keep reading...total leisure, read when I can sort of book. I did like it:)

Borrowed from public library. Adult historical fiction. Takes place in Livonia, Michigan, and traced the Kingsley family for five generations. This is her first boo, not the best writing, but fairly clean.

I hated this book the first time that I read it. And the second. By the third time that I read it, I wondered why I continued to re-read it. But I continued. I'm pretty sure that J.D. Salinger got me through high school.

Transforming Prayer by Daniel Henderson is a must read for anyone looking to revolutionize their prayer life. Henderson is a senior pastor and has been putting on worship prayer conferences around the country for years Now he takes the wisdom he has learned from these workshops and his own study and puts it in this book to help readers develop their own prayer life. The book is filled with testimonials from several people who have attended the conferences and have had their lives, both prayer life and whole life, transformed. Henderson uses Scripture and Jesus' own instructions in the Lord's Prayer to get to the nitty-gritty of prayer. He convicts readers (me included) of often praying a "grocery list" of prayers, just checking off a list and using prayer to seek God's hand to fix things for us, rather than seeking His face, which should be the true focus of prayer. He offers a four-step guide to prayer using a music conductor as a guide. Here are some terrific quotes from the book: We attempt to use prayer to get our will done in heaven rather than His will done on earth. Asking [in prayer] is the doorway...to discovering the profound joy of a transformed life. What motivates us to ask can often be all over the map. What motivates our Father to answer is that He would be glorified in our prayers through the person and work of His Son, Jesus Christ. This is an excellent book for anyone looking to transform their prayer life by seeking His face, and not His hand.
Hala bir kukla gibi hissediyorum, ama en azından biraz daha az bir kukla gibi hissediyorum. Sanırım bu bir şey.
