** spoiler alert ** I finished City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare earlier today. Let me begin by saying this: I adored the original Mortal Instruments trilogy. Hell, forget past tense: I adore them. Jace’s inner turmoil, Clary’s confusion and struggle to find the strength to save everyone she loves, Simon’s sudden thrust into the world of the Shadowhunters and their world…it was beautiful and new and everything I love in a book. Which was why CoFA was such a disappointment. I feel like Clare brought us all back to square one. At the conclusion of City of Glass, the book previous to CoFA, we find out, finally, that Jace is NOT Clary’s brother after all. Cue the happy music, the celebration scene, then seal it all with a kiss and you have a near-perfect beginning to what should be a wonderful relationship full of love, trust, and understanding after weeks of torment and confused feelings. But in CoFA, Clare takes that all and shoves it off a cliff while she stands at the edge cackling. Jace is back to square one: he’s whiney, he bitches all the time, he’s “deep” and has “conflicted feelings” about these nightmares he has where he kills Clary. Also, Clary is worried that he “doesn’t love her” and that she’s “losing him” even though both of them have proven time and time again that their love is stronger than anything (even death, hint hint). The only character with room for emotional development was Simon (his mother discovering his vampirism, his split feelings for Isabelle and Maia, etc.), and Clare doesn’t even go so far as to do THAT. Speaking of Simon’s split feelings, this book was basically one enormous relationship drama extravaganza. You have the following struggling couples: -Jace and Clary -Simon and Isabelle -Simon and Maia -Maia and Jordan -Alec and Magnus -To an extent, Simon and Clary It’s like a poorly written fan fiction that’s filled with smut and make out scenes, and all the ACTUAL plot just serves to push the story somewhere, anywhere, as long as it ends in this huge climactic scene where Jace has to make “a choice” or “a sacrifice” or whatever the fuck Clare wants to call it every damn time he does it. I get it, Jace. You’re moody and full of angst, and so you feel this overpowering need to risk your life for others because you feel like yours doesn’t matter. You don’t need to shove it in my face every other page, especially when you still harbored these feelings in City of Bones, which was the FIRST book in the series. I would’ve thought you’d been developed by now. I guess not. There were like four different plots running at the same time and I still don’t know how each one was connected to the other one. What in the world was this book even about? And don’t even get me started on this cocktease of a villain. Just don’t. Oh Cassie. Por que?
