Oh man, I HATED this book. In this short story collection, Rick Moody artfully applies all of the worst elements of fiction to create saccharine, predictable stories about character that are flat and unsympathetic. I was thrilled when bad stuff happened to them. This is one book I didn't even bother to finish - I got through the 100+ story right in the middle and then threw the book across the room, resolving to flip this guy off if I ever meet him. I think Rick Moody has singlehandedly soured me on fiction. Thanks, pal.

Don't know what to say ... It's the last book in the series. For my thoughts, visit my blog http://urbanparanormal.blogspot.com

This unfortunately short play ("No Exit") changed my life, as morbid as it is to claim such a thing. Thrilling, shocking, saddening and eye-opening all at the same time; truly existentialism at its finest.

This was an amazingly told story - touching, edifying, emotional, mystical. I love that Alice Hoffman gave voices to women of ancient times, that such a story full of love, devotion, and spirit could also cause me to do research, and go looking for more. Thank goodness for the internet, where I was able to look up Masada and Moab and even the meaning of "CE" as it applies to dates/time. For most of the book, I was fully involved with the story, hearing the voice of character. Only at the end, in the final paragraphs did an awareness of this as a piece of fiction come back to me - causing me to wonder "how did she do it?" How did Hoffman (long one of my favorite authors) manage to put this story together. It's incredible.

As always, I love Cassandra Clare. I'm torn - but not upset - with the ending, and this finale includes two of the most heart-wrenching scenes I've read in a long time. As in, I bawled...almost uncontrollably, and I can't even hint at the content of these two scenes without creating major spoilers.

The book revolves around the sexuality of a housewife, but could have been cute if the writing was not tasteless.

I love the Kitty series but this one surprised me. I think it was more like a horror movie. The title does not lie, it is really Kitty's House of Horrors.

I love Stephen King, not carnally, but spirtually and as a writer. He gets a short shrift from the snooty literary crowd because much of what he writes is considered horror. Many - not all - of his stories include an aspect of horror, but he writes about people and about the world we inhabit. When he uses horror, it's to show people under extreme conditions, how they rise and fall and persevere. "Hearts in Atlantis" relates five short and long-short stories tied together tightly in some cases, loosely in others. They take Bobby Garfield from 1960 (boyhood) to 1999. Using this quintet, King tells a story of the sixties, of a childhood love that colors the rest of Bobby's life, of Vietnam and how it affected the young people of the sixties, of a whole dorm floor flunking out of college and risking the draft - obsessed with a marathon card game. Some of King's constructs in "Hearts" are at minimum, wierd, and might by some standards cross over into horror. But "Hearts" is not, however, a horror story, but a story of life and love and death and a generation struggling to change destiny. A WORD TO THOSE WHO WON'T OR HAVEN'T READ KING BECAUSE HE'S A "HORROR" WRITER: King also wrote "Shawshank Redemption," "Stand By Me" (The Body)," and "The Green Mile," all great stories made into great movies...in my opinion anyway. If you liked the movies ("Hearts in Atlantis" with Anthony Hopkins included) you'll love the books.
