Still going well as a series, though it has become a little formulaic. But how could it not? The level of tension has receded somewhat, as has the contact with everyday people. In this book, except for the new cops introduced, no ordinary folk were characters. Mavis pulling off a character was a hoot and pitch perfect. Enjoyable but not necessarily worth a re-read. I have #1-10 and occasionally re-read them but few of the later ones come up to that level.

a great look at race relations in London!

A childhood favorite which was even wackier than I remember it being. The plot is all over the place and takes the characters into outer space to fight an alien race intent on eating humans, back to the chocolate factory, and into Minusland. A fun romp, though not as good as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because of the randomness of the plot. The humor was also much punnier, which is not something I enjoy, and it outdated itself with some racial slurs in the beginning that would have been fine in the 70s when the book was written, but make readers cringe now. Interesting commentary on politics, though.

While this book will not have a profound effect on my life, I did enjoy it immensely. Once I got caught up in the story, I realized it was so much more than sci-fi. It's more about a boy's search to find a home and have a normal life than it is about aliens.

This one could almost go on my 'Strange, Wonderful, and True' shelf. Renault's historical fiction is wonderful - put her right up there with Patrick O'Brien. Since she writes about classical times, she invents a lot to fill in the blanks, but her scholarship is considered (not by me - by actual scholars) to be first-rate. This is the second in Renault's trilogy about Alexander the Great. The title character, Bagoas - a real person - is a nobly born Persian whose father is betrayed and murdered during dynastic turmoil. He is abducted, castrated, and enslaved. Because of his beauty, he is eventually sold to the Great King Darius as a sexual plaything. We first hear of Alexander as court rumors of disturbances far to the west, but eventually he assumes center stage. Renault portrays Alexander vividly as a man full of life and motivated by honor and love. The central relationship between Alexander and Bagoas is convincing and touching. I've read several books about Alexander and this one won't be the last. Renault describes and motivates Alexander's growing affinity with Persia, his conflicts with the Macedonian army, and other issues.

Somewhere in betweeen Walker Percy & Truman Capote, falls Marilynne Robinson. This is a sweet tale from a father to his child. The story is slightly religious without being too much so.
