Book two in the Secret Sister Mystery series. From the back of the cover: Ida Mae Babbit has done her community service and is a reformed woman--no more law-breaking for her. She's bound and determined to get to the bottom of this case. But can she solve the mystery before she becomes the next victim? I'm not big on mysteries, but this book had me turning the pages as quickly as I could. The characters are very well developed and believable. They had me laughing all the way through. Pinkston did an excellent job as director of her book, casting every character as she kept an enjoyable pace. Ida Mae is this crotchety old woman who speaks her mind, but with a twist of humor. She is so likable that I wish she was a real person. Eden is a sweet young lady who has the strong desire to help others and goes beyond herself to do so. There is never a dull a moment. There is a part that pulled me out of the story. Ida Mae meets with Dr. Greene out on the beautiful patio. It is washed with warm sunshine, surrounded by lush greenery. Ida Mae wondered why they didn't meet in the office instead. The scene closes as she leaves the doctor's office. This book is so well-written, it had me wondering if maybe it was just me? I really enjoyed how the author salted words outside my vocabulary range such as chartreuse, and octogenarian. The word fractious even had Ida Mae's doctor scrambling to squeeze her into his already booked day--and he doesn't know what it means. I'm not alone. Just when I thought I had things figured out in this mystery, Tristi Pinkston throws in an unexpected twist that made the read all the more exciting.

Wow. So I gave the book five stars yet I will never read it again. Strange, you think? It was incredible from a purely literary standpoint. I read the book in less than a day because I felt so driven towards finding out what happens in the end. The prose enveloped me. That said, this book is haunting. I fully expect to have nightmares tonight. I actually felt claustrophobic, terrifed, and apprehensive. I think that once was enough.

I was skeptical of this particular book, given that I wanted the title to be accurate. Even though there was no salvation involved, it was nice to have something to read that didn't focus on the decimation of indigenous people in South America, right-to-work legislation, or construction workers in post-Katrina New Orleans. Really, the book was well written and AM Homes really did make a rich fuck of a protagonist completely sympathetic.

I wasn't sure what to expect in Hunter of Shadows, the first semi-spin-off in Gideon's Moonlight series. I've grown to love Charlotte and Max, the focus of the first four books, and while I found Silas interesting, I wasn't sure he could carry the story. Of course, Gideon proved me wrong. I really enjoy her writing style and the were lore she's created with this series. This was certainly not my favorite of the series, but it reassured me that even if Charlotte and Max are now side characters I will continue to enjoy the series. In Hunter of Shadows, Detective Silas MacCreedy, who we met in Bound by Moonlight is on a mission. Tragedy in his past has led him to New Orleans where he hopes to "secure his clan’s place once again in the Shifter hierarchy". His plans become cloudy when he "rescues" (Mo)Nica Fraser, a childhood friend of Charlotte's, one night. He quickly learns that Nica, an assassin with a mission of her own, is more than capable of taking care of herself. The sparks he feels when she kisses her "hero" make him remember his sister's words about mates. The romance between these two was not romantic, but rather fierce and wild, which was fitting considering their personalities. Charlotte and Max Savoie were side characters and I was happy to see them. I hope they continue to play a part in each of the following installments. I am anxious for #6, Seeker of Shadows, due out in June, which will feature Jacques, the shifter bar owner.
