Sergey Nikolaev sergey_nikolaev — Book two in the Secret Sister Mystery series. From the back of the cover: Ida Mae Babbit has done her community service and is a reformed woman--no more law-breaking for her. But when Arlett's granddaughter Eden discovers a mystery in a fancy nursing home, Ida Mae--with the perfect excuse of a broken wrist and a broken ankle--checks herself into the place. After all, it is for the greater good. Soon she's buzzing around in her motorized wheelchair, questioning the residents and swiping files form the office. She's bound and determined to get to the bottom of this case. But can she solve the mystery before she becomes the next victim? I'm not big on mysteries, but this book had me turning the pages as quickly as I could. The characters are very well developed and believable. They had me laughing all the way through. Pinkston did an excellent job as director of her book, casting every character as she kept an enjoyable pace. Ida Mae is this crotchety old woman who speaks her mind, but with a twist of humor. She is so likable that I wish she was a real person. Eden is a sweet young lady who has the strong desire to help others and goes beyond herself to do so. There is never a dull a moment. There is a part that pulled me out of the story. Ida Mae meets with Dr. Greene out on the beautiful patio. It is washed with warm sunshine, surrounded by lush greenery. Ida Mae wondered why they didn't meet in the office instead. The scene closes as she leaves the doctor's office. This book is so well-written, it had me wondering if maybe it was just me? I really enjoyed how the author salted words outside my vocabulary range such as chartreuse, and octogenarian. The word fractious even had Ida Mae's doctor scrambling to squeeze her into his already booked day--and he doesn't know what it means. I'm not alone. Just when I thought I had things figured out in this mystery, Tristi Pinkston throws in an unexpected twist that made the read all the more exciting.

Adam Shefsky a_hefsky — The Book Thief is not for the weak in heart. In this story, Death is a main character and he narrates as he shares stories of his human observations that involve compassion, heartache, hatred, and beauty during the Holocaust in Nazi Germany. With the workload that Death must endure during the war, he shares the stories that surround the likes of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl outside of Munich. I believe he is attracted to her story and how her gift keeps on giving to others and ultimately, herself. In my opinion, her story offers a distraction from Death’s constant experience with hate. Markus Zusak wrote with an innovative structure to this story. Death is constantly informing the reader about what is to come. Yet, as the reader, I would press on and still want to experience the ebb and flow of emotions with the characters. Perhaps, Death’s announcements of his work ahead of time take the focus off one person’s death and sustain the constant pressure and fear for all of Nazi Germany. Occasionally, Death will interject the story with his work and, for me, it served as a reminder that Death was always looming and his visits were truthfully an inconvenient interruption. The character development is outstanding. There are many colorful characters in this story. There is some language. However, I hardly found it offensive. It is ugly language in an ugly time in history. I found myself hearing how the characters would say something before I read the author’s description. That being said, the development of the characters is thorough and, consequently, I found the pace in the early part of the book to be slower. By the end, I can admit to being grateful for the details. This story continues to give me insight after I have finished the book. The thought of me personally being or becoming a “word shaker” in my community or in my family is inspiring. And though I am “haunted” by the reality of the Holocaust and the hate depicted, I am lifted up by the ordinary people that stood against the hate and offered love unconditionally.

Moo Guer mooguer — Following Shea and his fellow adventurers on their journey to save the four lands from the evil of the Warlock Lord was an exciting and well written experience, albeit a bit reminiscent of The Lord of the Rings. The characters developed well and their relationships proved to grow more multifaceted as the pages turned. Descriptions of the environments and surroundings sometimes got bogged down with wordy and yet unspecific landscapes. The battle scene near the end also has a more "overview" type description which works for the point of view of the main characters, but doesn't allow the reader to feel like a part of the action. Overall it was a fantastic read and excites me to dive deeper into the world Terry Brooks has created.

Julián Arias julianarias — I really liked this book (and I just read an autobiography of a geisha from Kyoto which was remarkably similar - so it seems it is a pretty accurate depiction along with being a great read!)
