3 Stars-- based only on the Just One Taste story (er, "prequel") by Victoria Dahl. Bah, I wanted more, and am glad that these characters will be seen again. Even in this short format, Dahl's knack for creating female & male characters with a strong sense of self (and some not-so-huge hangups) shines. The author is incredibly good at describing the giddy desire (the "not-sure-if-this-a-good-idea") stage of the characters' attraction, which is mostly the phase where these characters are located in this story. Also in Dahl's books, the hero and heroine seem to each play with the concepts of what is "good" and "naughty." In this story, Beth and Eric are super examples, in that how they define themselves and see each other isn't necessarily what they are...but because this is a "prequel" we'll have to see where it all eventually leads. As for the those two stories, I have never gotten into Lori Foster's Über-Alpha males (for whatever personal taste issues) and the Susan Donovan story seemed to skew a bit over my age group (it's about the mother of college-age teen on vacation), so those stories were perfectly nice neighbors, but not ones I will visit anytime soon. So, I read this book because a) a GEB girl recommended it to me and b) it's about falling in love with someone you've never met. Within the first couple pages, and the first couple name-drops of "Prada bag" and "GAP perfume," I was prepared to hate this novel as thinly-veiled marketing. After seeing all the characters neatly described by their a) hobbies and b) clothes, I expected this novel to have absolutely no depth whatsoever. "Great, another high school novel that would really rather be a chick-flick movie." It's got that "high school glamor" to it that clearly designates it as a book for girls who are too young for high school. In spite of all that, I was surprised to find a glimmer of depth here, in an after-school-special sort of way. After all that talk about name-brand and all that time describing the protagonists' clothes, the message actually ended up being about challenging assumptions and breaking out of the role that your peers assign to you. What's more surprising was that it almost had a Jane Austen feel, picking up on her penchant for exposing the "charmers" as dangerous and the "misunderstoods" as noble. Although I don't think it was the authors' intention, this book could be interpreted as a modern version of "Pride and Prejudice." And that really tickled me. So it ended up being less time wasted than I thought. ***

It's hard to rate something like this book. The text itself acknowledges the truth of the title: it is a single grief observed, not grief in general. Interest in C. S. Lewis and his life, or his point of view on faith, or interest in this book through recent grief of your own, is the best portal into this book. I haven't lost anyone as near and dear to me as H. to Jack. I lost my grandmother recently, and I recognise some of the feelings he describes -- and oh, how much do I fear feeling them for myself in full force, one day. He is analytical about his grief, thinking it through in stages, asking questions of God and trying to answer them for himself. Thus, it's not quite as painful to read as it could be. His son's introduction is quite painful, when he speaks of 'Jack' and his pain, so familiarly, so tenderly. I hate the reviews of this that say it's all mind and no heart. Probably because I'm an analytical, 'cold-hearted' person myself -- I see myself in C. S. Lewis' observed grief -- and yes, I feel pain as much as anyone else, I just address it differently. Everyone grieves in different ways; no two griefs are alike. Truly cheerful stuff to read on one's birthday.

All the books in the Stephanie Plum series are great! If you think you are having a bad day, just read one of her books, and it will make you feel better!

This is one of the most powerful books I've read. It's an autobiography of a young girl and her family during the oppressive Pol Pot regime. I traveled to Cambodia last year with only a faint idea of what the Khmer Rouge was and of what actually happened in that country in the late 1970s. Loung Ung's story is a story is one of survival. If it weren't, it would be too heartbreaking to bear. Under Pol Pot, people were forced to leave their homes in the cities and move into the countryside where they were to be "rehabilitated" as farmers where many died of starvation or were executed by the Khmer Rouge. It decimated the population. Today, forty percent of the population is under the age of 15. Cambodia is an amazingly beautiful place. The 1,000-year-old temples of Angkor are some of the most amazing structures ever built. The people of Cambodia are warm and welcoming. I am humbled by their strength.

When is it better to lie than to tell the truth? There are many lies in this Maisie Dobbs' installment. Maisie must make some difficult decisions about what to tell a client, and she discovers that even those she trusts are capable of telling lies. Maisie travels to France to investigate the deaths of two WWI aviators. In the process she faces up to some lies she's told herself, and undergoes some serious soul-searching. Another engrossing read!

This highly-contentious book claims to be the found diary of a teenage girl. [SPOILER ALERT!] It chronicles a year or so of her life after she's run away from home, experimented with sex and drugs and then comes home to get clean [SPOILER ALERT!] but relapses, and dies of a drug overdose. Turns out, however, that it could be the work of Beatrice Sparks, a psychologist and Mormon youth counselor. Kind of makes you want to read it even more, no? Read as either fiction or non-fiction, the book is quick and interesting.

Okay when I added this book, I seemed to be the only one (must have been a glich in the system that day) so I wanted to be able to invite more people to read and add to their libraries if I found it good. And I did. Actually I thought it was great. Yes, some of the themes are similar to other books I could name (but won't). But there seems to be a fresh approach to magic juxtaposed with technology that I don't think a lot of people are seeing. Or maybe I just love routing for the new authors. But still I loved reading this book from start to finish and wish my library had the new one right now!! (on a Sunday, no less) So this is where I plug if you like so and so author, read Ilona Andrews. Though actually the most interesting part is that Ilona writes with her husband Gordon (I don't know that he gets much props in the book other than the acknowledgements). And I only know this because the book didn't have an author biography. So I was intriguied; could it be a ghost writer, I mean what books don't have the author biography. And I was all set to learn that Ilona Andrews didn't exist (at least not in cyberspace where it seems to count) and then I get hit with this is a team effort. Very cool and I commend both authors for a job well done.

Bilinçli anlatı akışı için birkaç yıldız vereceğim. Ama hikaye beklediğim kadar sürükleyici değildi.
