I actually 'read' this book as an audiobook during a series of weekend trips. I don't usually go in for the murder mystery genre, but this book was so good that I found myself looking for excuses to get in my car and drive around town, allowing the radio to keep playing even after I reached the grocery store. There are a number of really great characters and the plot has so many twists and turns, mysteries piled on mysteries. I definately recommend as a fun, get lost in another world book.

This book has it all and is a total must for anyone who enjoys science fiction and/or detective fiction. It seems like every fictional hard-nosed detective has suffered and seen it all and is left emotionless and detached, but Takeshi Kovacs is so much more. He is pissed off on a level so deep that his policy of TOTAL WAR with anyone who crosses him recalls a young Ender Wiggin. There are two more Takeshi Kovacs novels that follow Altered Carbon and they each have a different feel, but are still excellent.

Easy read, endearing story about a man dying and reflecting on his life. Apparently it was written in 3 days, and can be read in a hour or two.

I read this book when I was younger and wanted so much to be able to sail off to a deserted island in the middle of a lake and play at being a pirate or an adventurer or explorer. A truely charming story.
