Very interesting book that made me comfortable with my own thoughts and viewpoints. I like to think that many of the driving principles of Harlan Hubbard are not too far from my own (though I would never compare myself on any profound level to such a great man). It was of comfort to know that men like him have existed in the modern era. This book discusses, very simply, the life of Hubbard and his wife, who remove themselves from society to live a subsistence life far from the hustle, bustle and plagues of modernity. One thing that stuck out for me was his discussion of noise and just how much noise there is in cities or in any overly developed area. He doesn't even use machines to farm and one of his principle reasons is that "they just produce too much racket." Truth.

It took me so long to complete this book, but its worth it. It delivered a riveting basic economic view, and this book was useful for beginners......a standard economic system outlook and a great tool to learned. Smith was very perceptive towards labor, monopoly, values, and revenue likewise lending and borrowing. He says, that whoever derived his revenue from a fund which is own, must draw it either from his labor, from his stock, or from his land. That derived from stock, by the person who manages or employ it, called profit. That derived from it by the person who does not employ it himself, but lends it to another its called the interest or the use of money. The compensation which the borrower pays to the lender, for the profit which he has an opportunity of making by the use of the money. Part of the profit naturally belongs to the borrower, who runs the risk and takes the trouble of employing it; and part to the lender who affords him the opportunity of making the profit. Its the Invisible hand or visible hand of the market I say, was vividly perceived that make sense....that self regulatory of the marketplace that individual ambition benifits society, even if the ambition have no benevolent intention. That if each consumer is allowed to choose freely what to buy and each producer is allowed to choose freely what to sell and how to produce it, the market will settle on a product distribution and prices that are beneficial to all individual memebers of community, and a community as a whole. A great book to start for an economics beginner like me.

Declare was my first book by Tim Powers. It was absolutely absorbing. He takes you on a dark ride through the super secret organization that resembles a paranormal CIA. WWII Paris, Germany, Cold war Lebanon, Arabia, Turkey and Russia. A great book for fantasy lovers or just plain action lovers.

This book was so good although at times I found it hard to follow which character the book was talking about. I liked how the book was about teens that had problems that teens would have in real life. I liked how the book had twists that you didn't see coming and how the end tied in with an even in the story. I also liked how it seemed to be real. This story didn't end with all of them getting better although some did. I thought this dealt with mental illness in a realistic manner.

This overlooked first novel is very good, and I'm not the only one who thinks so. Gayle Brandeis won Barbara Kingsolver's Bellwether Prize, and the back jacket carries an endorsement from Toni Morrison. Not at all bad for your first time out.[return][return]The book moves back and forth between the story of a young Korean woman forced into prostitution on an American base, and her daughter by an unknown black serviceman. The title of the novel refers to the mother’s scrapbook memorializing the countless pet birds that her daughter has inadvertently slaughtered over the years. It's never 100% clear, actually, how accidental all the killings are. The daughter, Ava Sing Lo, is extraordinarily loyal to her mother, to the point of having internalized her mother's embarrassment and distance and turned them against herself, and so the unspoken possibility exists that the killings are unconscious acts of vengeance. The story, then, involves Ava's reclaiming of herself while simultaneously establishing common ground with her mother, on mutually supportive terms, for the first time in her life. The book also offers a terrific portrait of the communities surrounding southern California's Salton Sea, which is where Ava ransoms herself in the midst of a massive die-off of shorebirds.[return][return]The language is wonderful, and the main characters are well drawn. There were a few points where the social message of the book threatened to hijack and eclipse the story, and there is one sub-plot involving a series of murders that is never adequately explained or resolved, but these are really minor criticisms, and I’d highly recommend the book. I’m especially interested in reading the author's future efforts. Her next novel is due out in early 2007, I believe. She has a website and her own blog. If she can win the marketing game and get the attention she deserves, I think she may be at the beginning of a very promising career.
