Holy cliffhanger Batman! I really really liked this book. It was a little too long and technical in some parts, but a really cool premise that kept me going. I've read several of Card's books even though I'm not really a sci-fi person, and I'm always impressed. He's a great storyteller. But it's the first in a series... And it's still in hardcover. Bummer.

This book provides a broad overview of our association with apes through history. That history ranges from admiration and respect to exploitation and killing. Most of the material covers familiar ground. This includes, for example, Huxley's response to Bishop Wilberforce: "'...the question is put to me would I rather have a miserable ape for a grandfather or a man highly endowed by nature and possessed of great means of influence and yet who employs those faculties and that influence for the mere purpose of introducing ridicule into a grave scientific discussion - I unhesitatingly affirm my preference for the ape.'" The book contains many excellent illustrations and pictures, including a 19th century humorous cartoon of Darwin's head on the body of an ape. That representation may be truer than what was intended at the time.

Tolstoy's epic, often referred to as the greatest novel of all time, did not let down. Sometimes reading like the best fiction ever, other times like a historical textbook with a decided point of view, the book never ceased to surprise me with its insight. I can't wait to re-read this in a decade or two: it's relevant to me, my life, my world today and I'm sure it will be then as well.

A slow, but good read. Thought provoking, but terribly depressing. In sum: a Jr. in high school shoots 10 of his classmates and injures 19. He uses the bully defense after his is arrested. Makes the reader think twice about who the victims at a school shooting are. I enjoyed it, but Picoult could have covered the material in 300 pages, not 455.

I don't typically make a habit of disliking books, but I think it's because I don't typically make a habit of reading books like this one. But it's all a matter of personal taste. I thought the ideas were interesting, and the whole treasure-hunt-style plot was great; there was just something about it that prevented me from falling into it the way I do with most books. I think it might have been the characters -- or blatant lack thereof.
