Yes, this was as awesome as everyone said! Wow. I loved the voice, the whole stream-of-consciousness really worked well for her, and I loved that she got away with those super long sentences since my critique partners don't let me get away with mine! Seriously though, I was ready to stock my shelves with canned goods and start growing my own food after reading this! And I laughed out loud as many times as I cringed and teared up. Great book. Okay, I did have two things that bothered me about the ending though that I had a hard time getting past. WARNING: SPOILER First of all, I don't buy that Daisy just left Piper out there alone and went back to America. After everything they went through, she's just going to leave the nine year old by herself? Yes, her father was in charge now, but she could have pleaded with him to find a way to bring Piper with her, and when that didn't work, she should have hidden in the lambing shed with Piper when the officials came to bring her back to America. She considered that her home now, not America with her father and stepmother, so why just go back as if helpless when all this time she's been defiant against the man? Second, I don't buy that her father could get her out. These weren't two countries having a religious or territorial dispute that this American girl got caught in the cross-fire with - these were insuurgents who would murder a whole group of civilians including women and babies in cold blood; they would blow the face off a young man for saying the wrong thing without a second thought. If her father had strings in the state department, etc. they wouldn't have mattered with these men. So, I don't buy that he could make some phone calls and just get her sent back. Okay, so I still oved the book, just had some problems with the end!

The dark fantasy vision of Australian author Garth Nix in this first book of the Old Kingdom Trilogy (sometimes known as the Abhorsen Trilogy) is powerfully realised! The world he's created is compelling and at times reminded me a little of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series. His writing boasts some unique and effective descriptive phrases that jumped out at me from time to time. If I was picky though, I'd say that the weakest area of the book is the romantic portions which I felt were quite awkward and unconvincing. Also, the characters are a little cliche and sometimes behave inconsistently, making them seem less believable. And occasionally i felt some plot events were a touch contrived. However, these are relatively minor complaints, because I was certainly drawn in by the book overall and am keen to read the following two books in the series—Lirael and Abhorsen. I hear he's also working on 2 extra books to expand the original trilogy.

In her second novel, Sally Gardner's unique and creative blend of historical fiction and fantasy, shifts far more towards straight historical fiction (this time set amidst the french revolution), and is unfortunately worse off as a result. Whereas her wondrous debut "I, Corinader" was a tantalising read—at least for the first 80%, i wasn't a fan of the direction it took in the end—"The Red Nacklace" starts well enough, but then becomes tedious and focuses far too much on (what should be) secondary characters, at the expense of developing the protagonists adequately. It is still evident that Gardner is a talented writer with a unique vision and not all her magic is absent as evidenced by a brief spot of unexpected wonderment (chapter 29 OMG) towards the end. I think I'll read reviews of her other books before deciding whether to give them a go.

Too afraid to give away spoilers, but it was a great book. I expected preachy and it wasn't. This is one of the few and rare books that I plan on reading again in the future.

Goldy is an airhead. Why does everything have to be a struggle for her? She needs to grow a pair of balls and kick her abusive ex-husband in the ass. That will stop him from bullying her. This mystery was okay but I was constantly peeved by Goldy's helplessness.

This Alex Delaware was a little bit confusing ..... not as good as his previous two. There were way too many players in this one and he started getting way too wordy again. It was good - but not great. Just sayin.

I thought the book was good because i like the part when the three ghost came to talk to him ; one off then had a change,i don't remember the other one and the other one had took him into his future.I like that book.
I had a hard time getting into this book until 3/4 of the way through. That's where the story picked up. Calla's mom dies and she goes to stay with her Grandma in Lily Dale. Calla figures out that she has some psychic abilities, but she hasn't told anyone.

The travel aspect is interesting to me as someone who likes to travel. I didn't find her "revelations" all that revolutionary, but the author writes in an engaging enough way, and the humor is nice.
