First of all, I liked the concept - Heaven and Hell, demons among men, and what-not. Yet I had quite a few problems getting into this story...Beginning slowly, there were some small grammatical errors that bugged me, but soon the book became a lot more interesting. This middle portion was engaging, switching between character perspectives with brief cliff-hanger chapters and lots of action. I enjoyed it. But then, the end came. It wasn't bad - just not really engrossing. I found that I was reading a couple of paragraphs without realizing it - basically, it was OK. A little anticlimactic, but OK.

I was really excited to read this book, but I couldn't get through all of it. I liked the introduction, but then the meat of the book reminded me (in a bad way) of my brief stint at an English major. I didn't like being tricked into reading literary criticism!

I am always expecting a lot when I pick up a Winterson book and this one didn't fail to live up to expectations. Based loosely around the myths of Atlas and Heracles, Winterson gives these tales a whole new spin which blend creativity, philosophy and a hint of the surreal to question ideas of expectation, roles, fate and inner resolve. I recommend this book if you want to have a deceptively simple read that will leave you questioning one of the cornerstones of life: what is choice?

Jose Saramago presents so many interesting ideas in this book. It's not a long book, but it is packed with ideas. His writing style is unique; it was difficult to follow conversations at first. I had to reread sentences a lot since some of them are a page or a page in a half long! It will definitely make you think differently about death!

I couldn't get through this book because I was expecting the same fabulous plot and writing as Uglies. I was disappointed becuase the plot just didn't entertain me.

The Bourne trilogy is as highly paced and action packed as the movie, and the first two stories even end with a huge cliffhanger guaranteed to make you immediately start in on the next. The movies, although true to the feel of the books, are completely different from the actual stories, so worth a read. I love reading a book like this when I'm feeling restless and hemmed in--January! But do have the next two in the series at hand or you'll be really frustrated!

This is an odd, odd little book. It's probably the strangest ancient work of history you will ever come across. In fact, if it weren't for the fact that Procopius is otherwise a respected author of sixth century Byzantine history, one would be inclined to dismiss this work as the work of someone who was more than a little biased, sex-crazed, and, well, insane. As it is, it contrasts strangely with Procopius' other works, which are neutral-to-favourable on the subject of Justinian and Theodora, the rulers of the empire at the time he was writing. In The Secret History, however, Theodora is represented as a sex-crazed, infant-killing harlot, and Justinian, we are told, is quite literally the devil. No-one knows quite why this happened - was Procopius writing the real and unvarnished truth, in the hopes that his work would come down to posterity after his death? Is it a grudge-piece? Is it even written by Procopius? Much of the work cannot be taken at face value; much of the rest of it has to be skimmed in distaste (I really don't want to read about Theodora servicing fifty men in one night, thank you so much). However, if that is taken into account, it is still a fascinating read for someone examining some of the political attitudes and social mores which permeated Byzantium at the time - even if one does not believe the accusations laid at the door of the imperial couple, the question of why these particular accusations were made against them is an interesting one to ask. Worthwhile reading if you have any interest in the late Roman empire or Byzantium.

I read a lot of Steinbeck as a teenager: East of Eden, Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, The Pearl, Cannery Row, and a collection of his short stories. I bought Travels with Charley when I was 18 and took it to work one day, intending to read it at lunch, but got teased so badly that I began to leave it at home and eventually to neglect. "What kind of sissy crap is that yer readin'?" I was asked. I had a blue-collar job. What I didn't realize was that I had casually tossed aside what is surely one of the greatest travel narratives of all time. Steinbeck, aging and in bad health (his daughter said later she believed he knew he was dying) gathers up his poodle, Charley, and a bunch of provisions (including many bottles of booze) and heads off in his truck in search of America, and what he finds both delights and frightens him. Steinbeck's descriptive prose is unmatched. Here's a master writer showing off every now and again, just to make you wow. He characterizes Montana as "a great splash of grandeur," talks about the lanscape "shouting color," and relays the "excited crackle" of a fire he builds. But those are mere samplings; he can go on for whole pages, molding topography until the ear hears poetry and the mind sees a portrait. There's also a lot of ironic commentary that, sadly, you don't find much any more. He says that he was told that driving around the country with his dog might cause suspicion and curiosity. "For this reason," Steinbeck writes, "I racked a shotgun, two rifles, and a couple of fishing rods in my truck, for it is my experience that if a man is going hunting or fishing his purpose is understood and even applauded" Like Mark Twain's The Innocents Abroad, Travels with Charley: In Search of America is also a time-capsule, having been published in 1962. the same year he won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
