It was a good idea but the writing was confusing at times. The main character seemed to solve problem / mysteries without letting the reader know what he was thinking. The clues didn't match the conclusions. Good characters who seem to be a bit lost in this method of writing.

I wasn't as into this one as to its prequel, and it felt like it took a long time for the action to pick up. Still a fun read though.

Very interesting look at how social networks and conditions affect our behavior.

It's quite difficult to review this. From the harrowing descriptions of child abuse in both this and "The Way the Crow Flies" it seems highly likely that Anne Marie MacDonald must have been a victim, or at least a witness, of abuse herself. There were times when I just couldn't bear to contiue reading, although I did manage to finish it. She is a brilliant writer, even if her style is a bit overwrought and purple on occasions. But I would have liked at least something cheerful amid the gloom; James's actions basically ruin the lives of his entire family. It was heartbreaking to discover at the end that his daughter Kathleen, initially a rather unsympathetic character, had started to construct a rich, fulfilled life for herself, only to have it brutally interrupted. Do not read if you are prone to depression!

I really enjoyed the story and the history in it. However there are several parts where the author begins describing architecture at length, and if you do not find that interesting, those parts can really drag on and take away from the book.
LOVED this book! Very thought provoking. Lessons I learned and reflect on often.

What an amazingly great book! I loved how realistic the author made magic seem. Great Britain became a mysterious ancient world full of secrets that I want to go explore now. I absolutely LOVED the characters, the contrast of the magicians, the love story, the creepy darkness of it all, the gentleman and the way the author wove history and magic together in a way that I couldn't (and didn't want to) distinguish between. Granted it took me a good 300 pages to get really interested, but after that I was hooked. Don't give up on it! It is so worth the read.
this book was ok -- it was kinda funny at times kinda slow at other times -- i woudnt highly recommend it but it was alright - good for a mindless read

For another (and much deeper) view of "civilizations" past and present, see Daniel Quinn ...

I loved finding an old collector's version of this, buying it and reading the original story at last. I obviously grew up on the Disney versions, but having watched Finding Neverland, I was intrigued by JM Barrie's character and I wanted to read the original. This did not disappoint.
