Hard, gritty take on Batman. Something Miller owns the franchise on.

I read this on the Gutenberg website when I was bored in my job. Time well spent. Always interesting to go back to stories like these which tend to get distorted in the retelling. Constantly cited as a reflection of the duality of character inherent in Scotland and, in particular, Edinburgh - whatever that means.

Read this for a term paper in high school and really enjoyed it at the time. Can't remember much about it now, except for the sadness it brought. But there was hope, too. And it's interesting to read about the struggles of the people who settled the American midwest.

Lady Julia Grey, widow and heiress, is determined to settle things with the half gypsy investigator Arthur Brisbane, who solved her husband's murder and who also won her heart. So, with her sister Portia and brother Valerius in tow, she sets off for the remote Yorkshire estate which Brisbane has purchased. They find a remote building on the moors, still inhabited by the remains of the aristocratic, inbred Allenby family, descended from King Alfred. Brisbane is rarely present, so Julia interests herself in the affairs of Lady Allenby and her two daughters, who have been left penniless on the death of her son, an Egyptologist. A gypsy who lives in a nearby cottage befriends Julia, but she, too, is keeping secrets. Julia gradually realizes that Brisbane came to this location for a reason, that he knows these people and has reasons to hate some of them. This may be the conclusion to a short series, but I hope not.

My main problem with this book is that I never felt close to anyone, and I surely didn't understand anyone's motivations (including the narrator). I wanted to like it so badly. It goes by quickly.

This is obviously a debut book. I wasn't that engrossed by it, I didn't enjoy it all that much and it wasn't that easy to follow. The things that frustrated me most about the book were that at the beginning certainly, the chapters were far to short. It felt as if they were slow to start and only built up a momentum with a couple of lines left, and then the chapter was over and you had to start the whole process again meaning you couldn't get a good flow together. Whether it was just the pre-production copy I had or not, but there were quite a lot of glaring grammatical errors within the first few pages, and many sentence's made no sense what so ever. I felt the book had a pretty good middle, but the last 3rd of the book was truly awful. It was difficult to follow, made almost no sense what-so-ever and felt like it was there just so it could be shelved under a 'fantasy' header in a shop. Was it a bad book? No. Was it a good book? No. Did I enjoy it? Parts of it yes, I did, parts of it I just wanted to skip so I could reach the end sooner. Will I read the second book? Maybe. Would I recommend it to a customer in my shop? No. This was a polar opposite of the last book I read 'Temeraire' Which I would recommend to anyone and everyone. This, I would only recommend to people if they had read literally everything else in my 'Fantasy' section. Maybe the second book will be better. Hopefully it is. But I doubt I would go out of my way to buy it, I would probably only read it if I can get my hands of a proof copy from the publishers.

not bad, but after awhile you just WANTED SOMETHING DRAMATIC TO HAPPEN! I guessed the obvious and thought the last third of the book justified the rest. Havent seen the movie. Wonder if it is really sappy or only kinda sappy.

had been told that he loved to leave little hints about the future, bits of foreshadowing and what not, all over the place but I didn't really appreciate that until this book because this was the first time those connections were actually being made. While Erikson still doesn't do much in terms of direct descriptions of people or places he does manage to subtly give you a lot of details on various characters and nations. In fact, I could easily see myself reading books that just focused on certain groups such as the tribes of the Toblaki or the Moranth. He has hinted at so much about these people that it would be cool to really dig into their cultures and histories. At the moment I have my hands full just reading what he is writing. It isn't hard reading but I'm way behind in the series and have to catch up. Plus I really want to know what happens with Karsa and how his early actions in this novel will effect later episodes in the epic about Gods and the Malazan Empire.
