I really like this author's writing. He uses words nicely, and I liked the history embedded in the story--I felt like he laid out the history of Spain more concisely than anything I studied in college. (Can I still remember college??) But the ending was weak and so overall I was disapointed with the story. Too bad

This book offers a new way of looking at yourself. Using an ancient form of numerology, using your date of birth, you can learn key aspects of your attitudes and behaviors.

A great story about how Greg Mortenson's (an American mountain climber) experience building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The book highlights the good one person can accomplish if they take action. I had a couple of huge issues with this book, however. First of all, it was extremely annoying how many times "Mortenson" is repeated in this book (see Amazon.com's concordance on this book at http://www.amazon.com/Three-Cups-Tea-...). Combining "Mortonson" and "Greg" there is a whopping 2045 occurances on 334 pages. That breaks down to a litte over six times per page--pretty high on my annoyance radar. The word "school" only appears 437 times. What would have been wrong with using the word "he" a time or two to break up the monotony. Secondly, sometimes it read as an "Everything You Wanted to Know About Afghanistan/Pakistan But Were Afraid To Ask" rather than an account of the impact the schools had on the people in that region. I would have rather heard more about the people's lives who were changed than a background on Mother Teresa. The regional tutorial was very tedious and sometimes downright boring whereas the parts about his being held captive, the effects of his travels on his family, and the snippets about specific beneficiaries of his efforts were much more interesting. Overall it was a story I would have preferred hearing Greg Mortenson tell himself, from his own perspective. As it was, I feel it is rather confusing to list him as the "author" when clearly it was written in a third personal journalistic format by David Relin.

I will be the first to admit that I grew up in one of the squarest, whitest suburbs this side of Connecticut, but when I was about 14, my church youth group would take all of us to our sister parish in Mattapan. It was 1984 and when the 2 groups of kids got together over a record-player, hip-hop would very quickly take over and we would stand there, jaws dropped, watching kids pop and lock. I knew who Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were, but hearing how it all began first hand from Grandmaster Flash himself was the kind of story that you wouldn't believe if it was anyone else telling it. Sugar Hill records gets taken to task for their treatment of their artists and after reading that particular chapter, A Tribe Called Quest's "Show Business" now seems like an article from the Wall Street Journal.

I couldn't put it down! It is a riveting book, a little scary, but really makes you think about life as we live it now. It's a young adult novel, but I would highly recommend to adults as well.
I hope this is the Lowe-Porter translation. I'm rereading this. One of my all-time favorite books. Hans Castorp (neither genius nor dunderhead) is one of the most fascinating characters in all of literature.
