Another book that is better than it's movie counterpart, especially in relation to it's loony-bin thematics. This ranks higher in my loony bin book list because it's more relatable for me. The kid is 16 or 17 and seems normal, albeit a stint of depression and emergence into full on mental questioning and increasing paranoia. What I love is how normal he is, how he isn't obviously crazy or fucked up from early age. It's just this existential burden that inches it's way into one's mind when they reach that age, I think, that begins to take them over. Drugs play a small part, if not just weed, but beyond that this is a fairly common thing. So suddenly, he decides he feels suicidal, he sees things in his life in a whole different light, and it's very interesting to watch as he commentates from his mind in a perfectly non-challant fashion. As if, "My mind is going. Fuck. This sucks." It squeaks a little at the end after a book long ride on greasy wheels, and the movie exaggerates this full on practically turning the story into a love story (which it is NOT). It's a kid's basic struggle with depression and his questioning with his mind and the world around him, which gets him into more than he was ready for. He kind of realizes 'Hey, I'm not this crazy, come on', when he goes into the psych ward. It really is, kind of a funny story. I love this book.

I enjoyed this book but I believe it was very much a 'forbidden romance' paranormal fiction novel which made it semi-predictable. Although I am a sucker for cute romance and this book definitely contains it!

Read this book in the matter of a week, which is rare for me. It now finds itself somewhere in my top X books of all time. Of course I'm a sucker for time travel books, and this one handles it in a pretty interesting way. The only problem is I don't know how I can wait for the sequel to be published next Spring.

Petty thief with the gift of the gab saves the universe, using a book of magic, a cat and a knife. There was a noticeable downturn in David Eddings writing style a few boooks before he admitted that Leigh had become part of the team. The deterioration in the plotlines came after the admission and, in my opinion, the literary results of this teamwork are akin to a committee trying to design a horse. There is none of the crispness and ease of the dialogue in the Elenium or the Mallorean and the clarity of plotline has become much more blurred. There is even a deus ex machina which sits ugly as a broken bottle in a wine cellar. My daughter loves this book and will not let it out of her bedroom, which is fine by me.

hmmmmmmm..... I'm a little torn about rating this a three, but it doesn't really deserve a two, it kept my interest, and, was indeed, an escape. So then, why the hemming and hawing? Everyone has days, weeks, months and even years, that they would just like to shut down, pack it in and escape to an "other" place, what's not to like? In this context, of course the whole premise of the novel appeals, but I'm not sure our "heroine," Emily, really did escape so much as kind of, waffle. She went someplace she knew, with rejoinders of a questionable past, and plopped herself without really ever letting go of the bag of her "real" life. So where's the true escape? Maybe I'm just quibbling over a difference of definition, but, after all, it IS the name of the book! All of that aside, Delinsky delivers a fine bit of summer escapist fluff......

You might think, given the format of this book (short fictional stories of modern women followed by short character studies of BIble women) that it's a light read or a shallow Bible study with no more depth than the latest novel. But in reality, Liz Curtis Higgs, the author, has studied these Bible women extensively, and her study is evident in the lessons found in this book. The fictional stories add a dimension to the women in the Bible that we thought we knew. The Bible studies offer insights and useful information about the times and cultures in which the women lived. She also asks probing questions that allow you to apply the lessons learned to your own life.

Pat Conroy, değil. Beni yanlış anlamayın; bu kitap tamam. Ama lirik nesir ve duygusal olarak Conroy'un para birimini beklediğini okumayın.
