I had high expectations for Choke, and rightly so. However, I felt the main characters were retreads of characters from other Palahniuk books. I will say that the book got better as it went on. Maybe I have an appetite for unusual circumstances, but when the climax of a religious-themed book involves the sickest of bodily fluids, then I'd say you made a perfect landing. Without a doubt, Palahniuk is a writer who finds a way to entertain without being too poetic. I just wish the first 2/3 of the book was as audacious as the last act.

my first encounter with jim crace and i completely fell in love with his prose. vivid sensual writing. and he's not afraid to tackle the BIG issues like faith, god, life and death. quarantine is as much about the power of storytelling as it is a narrative about Jesus's 40 days in the desert.

This is an easy, quick read but extremely interesting. I spent the first fifty pages trying to find out if the author leans right, left, or center... only to discover his radical proposals defy American party lines! Amazing! Everyone should read this book, if only so I can hear their arguments against Michaels' argument. It bounces from argumentative, to observational, to depressing, to optimistic. The title is conclusion is downright frightening.

squel to howl's castle. Not as fun but interesting to see what happens to the characters in the future.

This graphic novel is so dark it's almost black. Literally! Other than the word balloons and the few scenes that take place in the daylight, the pages are either black or gray. The story itself is quite dark also: an American detective investigating the murders of several factory girls in Mexico. I wasn't very impressed with either the story or the art, but then again, I read this right before going to bed. Maybe I'll give it another shot, maybe not.

I do not understand the appeal of John Sandford. Several of my friends enjoy his books so I gave this one a shot based off of a recommendation. The characters were uninteresting, unpleasant, and annoying. The story line was the same thing. I kept reading the book hoping it would get good, but it didn't. There was no beginning, no climax, no good end..it just dragged on for 200+ pages. I would never read another book by this author!

There has been a lot of buzz about this book in many book blogs. I, personally, initially became interested in this book because of the cover. I don't judge books by the cover, but come on! It's gorgeous, right? My interest only grew when I learned about the 7 tests included. How excited was I to read this book? Super excited. I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but I was imagining something like how the main character would go through the 7 tests, trying to finish each one, sort of like an adventure. The book wasn't like that though. The tests are mentioned but you don't know what they are, which I found a little off. The story actually focused more on who was trying to kill Kate to prevent her from becoming a goddess. So most of the time, all Kate did was hang out in the humongous manor, being treated like a princess. I hate to say that I didn't like it just because it wasn't what I was expecting, because it had been my fault for imagining it to be the kind of story I wanted it to be. I did enjoy it. I'm not a huge fan of Greek mythology and have read some good books on it, but this book was somewhat different than the rest. In a good way. I really felt sorry for Kate. I can't even imagine what it'd feel like to have someone close to you be sick, and you have to watch them go through it. I felt that Kate was pretty strong, making the decision to go through the tests for her mother and giving up her freedom. That has to be pretty depressing. Ava wasn't one of my favorites but she's not a total bitch. You eventually get to see what she's really like. Henry, our Hades, was so...formal. I'm not really into guys like that. Yeah, I felt bad for him because of his lonely life, but there wasn't anything about him that made me like him the way Kate did. I did like James A LOT. He was funny, caring, and an all-around good friend. It's guys like him that I like. There wasn't enough of him in the book though, but I'm hoping he is in future books! There were a few things I didn't like about this book. The romance was limited and while some parts were pretty hot, it felt like the only reason Kate liked Henry was because he's lonely, like her. I was also expecting the 7 tests to be something bigger. And I was a little mad at something revealed in the end. But the ending was pretty shocking though. I thought I had something figured out, and instead was smacked with the truth. Wow. I have to say, I was reminded of 'Wither' quite a lot, but I like The Goddess Test much more. I'm only hoping the next book, 'Goddess Interrupted', is better.

I could probably give a quick synopsis of Ann Packer's latest offering SWIM BACK TO ME in five words...."it's about pain and loss". The pain involved is both physical and emotional and the loss is about every conceivable type of loss that leaves a gaping void in ones life from the loss of one's childhood, to the loss of a friend, a child, a spouse, a life-style, an unfulfilled dream....well you get the idea. While the author's writing style initially pulls you into each of the six stories it does not compensate for the unfulfilled feeling you get as a reader. There is truly no satisfactory resolution to any of the scenarios. It is as if the author were writing in her diary and relating events from her personal life experiences.......short little vignettes that unfold with no true beginning or end. Perhaps the reason Packer chose SWIM BACK TO ME as the title of her book is because the reader is left swimming in a sea of questions and must make it back to shore (and solutions) without any assistance from the writer. Guess that this reader is in dire need of some additional swimming lessons.
