No one writes like him. So so good.

Clara, a quiet woman, lives in the house she inherited from her father. A spinster school teacher who remains in her town of Whitfield. Her younger sister Nora sets off for New York to advance her career in radio. For four years (1934-1938) Clara and Nora write letters to each other. For Clara, life is difficult being a single woman during the Depression and things are not easy. Clara has a very personal and dramatic incident which forces her to confront her new circumstances in a very direct manner. Through this experience Clara realizes how quickly lives can become disordered and divided. Her beliefs are challenged and so is her self-contained wholeness as a person. Eventually Clara visits her sister in New York during a difficult time in her life. Nora in New York becomes a successful daytime soap voice and her personal life takes on some aspects of a soap opera itself. Nora enjoys a rock solid friendship with Evelyn who is glamorous but is less successful in her own on and off affairs. Throughout, Clara tries to remain the firm family base for Nora and her superficial lifestyle. Clara Callan is an engaging story indeed but I don't like novels that are written in the style of letters and diary/journal entries.

The writing was great and the character development was intriguing. Not really what I expected and I sure was glad when I finished reading it. I think I would've gotten more out of reading a non-fiction about the situation for illegal immigrants than reading this book.

This was a very long book, but the way it was laid out kept you reading without getting bored. This is really a tale of 3 women whose mothers abandoned them in one way or another. Eliza's mother died, Nell's mother put her on a ship and never came back, and Cassandra's mother dumped her at her grandmother's house. That may not have been how the authoress planned to have the story perceived, but that's how I saw it. The tale is fascinating. It begins on a ship bound for Australia and a little girl. The authoress gives you just enough to start you asking questions, then switches to one of the other threads. I can't tell you which one because I listened to the story on an MP3 player and I can't go back and look. Nevertheless, my point is you get a little bit here and a little bit there, then you are taken back to fill in gaps in the first bit, and so on. It really is genius. I love puzzles and figuring out plots, so this book was perfect for me. And the narrator was Australian which made it even better! The descriptions of Australia and Cornwall made me feel as though I was there. I could smell the earth in the garden and the maze. The characters seemed very real with personalities all their own. Eliza, the little independent orphan; Rose, the beloved invalid cousin; Cassandra, the obedient granddaughter; Mary, the loving village girl and true friend. Don't be discouraged by the size of this tome. You will read it quickly and long for it not to end. I'll be looking for more books by Kate Morton.

I went back and forth between "liked it" and "it was ok." Some parts of this book moved quickly and some dragged on forever. I found that most of the characters I didn't care about and I didn't much care if I found out who the killers were...but I did skip to the end to see who did it. I was surprised although I had suspected that their involvement, just not to that extent.

I've read this book so many times now it's ridiculous. This book has inspired mee in so many ways, the main character Case fights to restore his dreams in life while doing what he loves. This is a story of love, rehabilitation, computers, and female ninjas. One of the greatest Cyberpunk novels of all time.

Read this on a spring-like afternoon while staying up in the Catskills last week. A short, beautiful book of vignettes exploring aspects of native Papago desert agriculture, from traditional harvesting of unpredictable floodwaters to food preparation practices. There's a running note of shame and sadness throughout, as Nabhan writes of the how the once large and interconnected Papago lands have become 'enclosed' and Papago health suffers as it becomes ever harder for them to maintain their traditional farming and foods.
