I don't normally make it a habit of reading sad books. And this book is an amazing and moving but sad story. It is a great story about relationships and love and what people are capable of doing for love. The historical backdrop of a politically unstable Ethiopia is fascinating and adds an interesting edge to the drama. The main characters are all connected to medicine somehow. I think non-medical people will really enjoy the book but I think medical people will really love it.

I expected more from the book. It was very easy to follow and I enjoyed reading the first part of the book. The details of the war were okay and the finale was not what I expected. Looking forward to seeing the movie to see what ending they chose.

I'm not going to review every book in the Myth series as they all kind of run together after a while... but if you have a history of loving fantasy and you don't mind someone poking fun at the genre, then these short books are worth a quick read. They're easy to follow and a few of the characters are especially enjoyable (not necessarily the main character, which so often happens in fantasy... how many people say that Harry Potter is their favorite character from the series??) and the plots move fast, even though they aren't the most well-constructed things around. Don't expect to be amazed... merely entertained. And I would recommend skipping Asprin's forewards, afterwords, introductions, and whatever else he writes as himself... he doesn't come across as a likeable guy. Pretty annoying, really.

It seems appropriate to be writing my review of this book while not quite in my right mind. I can't blame my state of mind on any of the drugs mentioned in the book; mine is just from a migraine. I've hallucinated twice, once when my mother gave me Dramamine in case I'd get sea sick on a whale watching trip (I've never gotten sea sick) and once when on Vicadin after Sean was born (I immediately stopped taking it after that). I've never gotten drunk to the point of losing control of myself or needing to vomit (I don't like how alcohol makes my head feel) and I've tried any other drugs. Despite being the completely wrong demographic for this book, I enjoyed it! Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas reminds me most of Catcher in the Rye in that both are stream of consciousness adolescent rants fueled by drugs and alcohol. I did most of my reading of Fear and Loathing while Ian played Grand Theft Auto: Vice Cityand the video game compliments the book well. The only problem: I ended up picturing Thompson and his lawyer like the main character and his lawyer in the game. My favorite parts of the book was the drive to Las Vegas and the bar scene in Circus-Circus. I loved the description of the scared hitchhiker who was unfortunate enough to get picked up by two guys tripping on just about everything while driving at break-neck speed to Vegas. Having been to Circus-Circus, I laughed at his description of the circus antics happening overhead of the gamblers and drinkers. I don't know what possessed anyone to build a place that looks like a demented version of a childhood fantasy and then turn it into a casino.

What the hell. I read and read and read about his stupid trial and I guess I missed the punchline. What the hell happened! Is that the point? I did enjoy the suspense... Ugh.
