This is a very early slave narrative (1772) that is of interest mainly for historical reasons. James Albert had been African royalty who ended up being sold into slavery to a Methodist minister from New York. Upon his death the minister freed Gronniosaw, who then served as a privateer to clear his debts, then sailed to England, eventually ending up in extreme poverty a married to an English weaver. This narrative is more a tract about Christian faith (there is very little detail of his life as a slave), but sometimes the anger over his situation shows through the religious testimony: his awareness of the irony of being a wealthy African prince reduced to begging for food because he cannot find labor; his amazement that in a "Christian" nation he is constantly taken advantage of and cheated by the populace, etc. An interesting narrative.

This review was posted on my blog: http://thereadingkitten.blogspot.nl/2... Even though I absolutely loved the Vampire Academy books, I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this spin-off series as much. Rose is one of the best heroines I've ever read about and her character was one of the main reasons that I loved Vampire Academy so much. I didn't think Sydney would be as fun to read about as Rose was, but she really surprised me as the main character. I enjoyed reading about what her life is like and what it means for her to be an Alchemist. I think it was a great choice to make Sydney the main character of this series, because she's so different from Rose. It makes the Bloodlines series stand on its own and more interesting to read. I liked that I could read about the same awesome, familiar world and some of the characters that I loved, but still get a new and refreshing story. I loved Adrian in this book. I loved him in the Vampire Academy books as well, but as a love interest for Rose, I was more of a Dimitri fan. In this book Adrian is still his sarcastic self, but in a funny and likeable way. His character made this book a lot better, in my opinion. There isn't really any romance in this first installment, as far as Sydney and Adrian go, because Adrian is still trying to get over Rose, but I thought it was nice to see how he and Sydney got to know each other. Overall I really enjoyed this book, but it wasn't good enough for me to give it a five star rating. There's almost no action in the majority of this book, and I really missed that. Of course there was stuff happening, but there weren't a lot of life-or-death situations that were particularly exciting. The story was good enough to keep me reading, but if I didn't already know these characters and this world, I probably would've been bored and not very interested in the story. The last couple of chapters were very good, though. They had the action I'd been waiting for.

It's a decent book for what it is (something for teenagers and anything that gets them reading is a good thing), however, it's overrated and die hard Twilight fans are nuts.

A very interesting book that was hard to put down. This is not your typical novel about the Holocaust. It is a heart-breaking rememberance of a young boy's imprisonment and survival, but also tells the story of what happened to him after gaining his freedom and reuniting with his mother. To have survived all that Thomas survived is amazing, but it was very inspiring and up-lifting to see how well his life continued and how much he valued and cherished his freedom. He truly went on to live his life and to make a difference for others.

I love John Cusack but feel that he was miscast in the role, as are most of Nick Hornby's protagonists. Love his books though.
