Relatively unknown, Tom Sawyer Abroad is an insightful masterpiece of parody, directed mainly at insufferable know-it-alls, but never forgoing a chance to take a poke at religion or contemporary society. Set after Huckleberry Finn, this novella tells the tale of Tom, Huck and the former slave Jim being whisked across the Atlantic on a dirigible balloon. Time after time, Tom tries to show off his superior knowledge to Huck and Jim, only to be stopped short by an innocent question from one of the latter. My father read this book aloud to the brother and I when I was about eight or nine; and several times we had to call it a night, having been reduced to tears and unable to stop laughing. (The paperback edition I own, on the back cover, lists the principals as "Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and Nigger Jim"; I would like very much to know when it was printed, but the title page, on which the publishing date would normally appear, is missing.) In Tom Sawyer, Detective, Tom solves a murder mystery; his Uncle Silas is the prime suspect. Here, Tom displays a gift for observation and an admirably keen intuition that both starkly contrast with his bumbling storytelling in Tom Sawyer Abroad. This story is worth reading, but is not exceptional Mark Twain.

Thursday Next, former "Litera Tech", is pregnant and hiding out in an houseboat in an unpublished work of detective fiction as part of the Character Exchange Program. Next is apprenticed to Miss Havesham (of Great Expectations) as a "Jurisfiction" agent. Jurisfiction is the law enforcement within book world. Next is involved in solving mysterious deaths, testing a new book format, passing her Jurisfiction exam, and taking care of her Granny Next who decides to live with her through out the pregnancy. In order to read your first Jasper Fforde novel, you need suspend your need to know what is going on. Eventually some of it will make sense. These books are insane, humorous, fast-paced, and much too weird for several of my friends. This is my personal favorite Fforde novel.

Husbands and Lovers is the story of four main characters, set mainly against the backdrop of the 1970's and 1980's. True life events were woven into the fictional story throughout the novel, which very much set the stage for the characters. Being a child of the 1970's and a teen of the 1980's, I am a bit younger than the characters, but definately old enough to remember most of those events which really added to my enjoyment of the story. The story was centered on four main characters: Carlys (the married woman), Jade (the single woman), George (the lover), and Kirk (the husband). It opened with a prologue in which events were taking place in their present tense, although the circumstances were left intentionally vague, for reasons that become clear near the end of the book. Each part of the novel focused on one of those four characters, going back and forth in time to tell their story. That back and forth can make the reading of a story confusing and somewhat muddy, but there was absolutely none of that with this book. Instead it added to the interest of the characters and their stories and backstories. While each character was developed in their own part of the novel, their stories were woven together throughout the story. I really enjoyed the fact that no matter how much you learned about a character, enough was left unexplained that it throroughly built the suspense for the end of the novel. All that had been unexplained or left vague came together in the end and made for a great conclusion to the stories of these four characters. Because so much has changed in society since the time in which this story was set, it was interesting to revisit it and really see those changes. The political and social events taking place at the time, the sexual politics and the changing roles of women were all very different then, and using that to form the backdrop for the four characters was fascinating. So much of contemporary fiction focuses on women, but this novel was different in that it gave equal time to men and their stories. All in all, an excellent read that I highly recommend you pick up and read!

This was a good book for children. This was my mom's favorite book when she was little. It was sitting on the shelf at the house so I picked it up and read it. I liked it, it was good for being a childrens book but not the best one I have ever read.

Really enjoying this book -- I thought it would be slow, moving back into the middle ages, but instead this is really fast moving, exciting and interesting. I keep wondering how this woman kept herself hidden for all these years, and how in the world she managed to keep herself alive. Every other chapter, I'm wondering how she isn't dead yet. But she's smart, inventive, misses nothing -- and she's close-mouthed and shy. (A lot like me!) Great writing, interesting medieval perspective. I just hope she stays alive to the end of the book! This book overall was just mesmerizing. The stoy was really ingeniously plotted -- I absolutely loved the brilliant suspense!
