Julia Child is a force of naturebadass. She didn't discover cooking until her mid-30's, publish her cookbook until she was in her 40's, and at 41 thought her main problem was that she just wasn't SERIOUS enough. She lived all over the world and her 6'3" sister's nickname was Dort. Julia Child makes the world make sense. I SAID IT!

This is by far one of the BEST books I've ever read - the last 50 pages were like riding a rollercoaster in the dark....twists and turns I didn't see coming. The author knows exactly how to stay on task of telling this true story - without ever falling into boredom or going too far into the sickening details. Wow! What a ride!

This book proved to me that Palahniuk will most likely never match the intensity and greatness of his novel Choke. I do enjoy his books, but they are extremely dark in nature. I liked this book more than Fight Club, but it really isn't that memorable.

Beautifully written with an ending that I wasn't sure I liked until I had to explain the story to a friend over wine.

i actually really like this book, but don't use it as my main siddur (i use the "Tehillat HaShem" instead)... this particular book is helpful for someone who wants to be more traditional/Orthodox in her observance, and maybe needs help with regards to some of the halachah/minhagim concerning the davening (i.e. much footnotes regarding prayer times, etc.) the main thing i didn't like about the book was its leaning more towards a bit of misnagid/litvish sort of take on things and a bit of an absence (in my opinion) of the more mystical/esoteric ends of the prayers involved... in the back of the siddur is a section that i still take personal prayers from (even though i don't use the siddur to do my daily davening), it has some thkhines there for various situations (i.e. "prayer for finding a suitable mate", etc.)

Once upon a time, long ago, far away, there lived a young boy, aged somewhere around seven years old. At his school he had completed all those 'learning to read type books' and so he was allowed to enter the school library and select for himself a proper book to read. After wandering around the shelves for a while he finally picked out a book to read. It was called Theseus and the Minotaur. That first book was a scary introduction to reading matter! Today, over fifty years later, that old boy has re-read that story. Nigel Spivey's 'Songs of Bronze' is a collection of those wonderful Greek myths. The book begins and ends with Orpheus, but in between are tales of Herakles, Theseus, Perseus, Jason and the Argonauts, the War with Troy, Odysseus and Oedipus. All these stories are so very well written and set together by the author, yet retain their Bronze Age magic. Certainly not for little boys and girls.

The human race is exctinct, and its virus-induced demise is "written" about by the distant, fur-seal-like evolutionary descendant of the human race, who's ghost is actually that of one of humanity's last survivors.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy were always my all-time favorite books...until I read East Of Eden. So now they are my all-time fave fantasy. That seems hardly fair, though, since there isn't all that much great fantasy out there. Anyway, NOBODY writes like JRR Tolkien. Can't wait to meet him. I always know when I've read a great and timeless work of art by one or both of two feelings that overwhelm me when I've finished the last line. 1) A rush of wistful regret that it is over, 2) An immediate desire to read it over again. I felt both of these emotions when I finished LOTR. Simply the most amazing books I'd ever read - even though it was 1981, and I've read hundreds of books since, I still know nothing will ever compare to LOTR. The sheer genius of Tolkien's created worlds, races, and languages - both written and spoken! The depth given to every single character, every single conversation, every single thought, every detailed description, every journey, with detailed maps! Simply astounding, unparalleled. Many writers have the ability to evoke deep emotion, but Tolkien is in a class alone. How? Why? He is the unequaled master of controlling the reader's imagination. He takes us to the precipice of the darkest, most frightening abyss of evil, is able to hold us there repeatedly over the course of the story, yet there is always the glimmer, however faint, of hope. The deep, unspoken knowledge that Good will out - that it is stronger than Evil. We don't know how it will win, but we know. Nowhere else in literature do we find this incredible power over the mind's eye, the heart's strings. Because, really, nowhere else can we find the inconceivable heights of courage, honor, duty, honesty, humility, and love, nor the unfathomable depths of depravity, horror, greed, pride, selfishness, and hatred. In the end, as with everything in this life equated with greatness, it all comes down to Love. Truly, "the greatest of these is love", "love conquers all", "love covers a multitude of sins". It is love that wins the day in LOTR. Love for something higher than oneself. Selfless, kind, gentle, strong and unbending, unrelenting, unceasing, sacrificial, shining...love.
