But then I realized that the tedium was on purpose because it was exactly that life that Ada wanted to escape from. When she does escape, it's like a whole other book and I much enjoyed the second half.

After wandering around the shelves for a while he finally picked out a book to read. It was called Theseus and the Minotaur. That first book was a scary introduction to reading matter! Today, over fifty years later, that old boy has re-read that story. Nigel Spivey's 'Songs of Bronze' is a collection of those wonderful Greek myths. The book begins and ends with Orpheus, but in between are tales of Herakles, Theseus, Perseus, Jason and the Argonauts, the War with Troy, Odysseus and Oedipus. All these stories are so very well written and set together by the author, yet retain their Bronze Age magic. Certainly not for little boys and girls.
