A classic of science fiction, still very relevant.

Here's another book I enjoyed recently. I loved a couple of things about it: there are 3 sisters (like my family) they quote Shakespeare all the time (how fun is that?!) The author uses the collective "we" when talking about any of the 3 sisters (someone who knows about these things calls it the first-person-plural narrative voice. Anyway, I enjoyed it.

This was one the best books I have ever read. I could not put it down and was totally impressed with the author's method of telling stories. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Recommend it but don't lend it. There's a reason this book has become an all-time classic. Do not lend it to your friends under any circumstances. You won't get it back and it's one that you keep wanting to re-read and refer back to. I'm onto my 4th copy after friend lending.

An interesting interview with Terry Brooks (though it's not strictly an interview, each chapter seems to function as if it was one). I enjoyed it; a light read, but one that gives some insights into his work and his work ethic.

Didn't get this in time to read it for book club, but am enjoying it more than I expected. Finding lots of simiarities in my former really heavy self and the protagonist. Lots.

** spoiler alert ** The movie ruined the book for me. If you are going to read this, I say plan on not watching the movie. It's an interesting story of mental illness. I am amazed that it has such a cult following...I mean, individuals all over the world are changing their names, are starting fight clubs, are creating a real project mayhem.

I love short stories and these are some of the finest, most visceral, witty ones I have ever read. The most poignant story for me is "How To Talk To Your Mother (notes)". It is a year by year brief reflection on one's Mother memories from from the present back to birth. I lost my Mother to Alzheimer's early this year and I have been doing a lot of reflecting.Another of my favorites is "Amahl and the Night Visitors: A Guide to the Tenor of Love". One of the best opening lines ever. "Understand that your cat is a whore and can't help you." Brilliant. I shall track down more of Lorrie Moore's books to savor.

I used this book for part of high school class I taught. The high school students sometimes were confused by the sequencing of the book as it contains a lot of flashback and flash forward scenes. I especially liked the part about his memories of his childhood who died of cancer as well as the references to Minnesota. I attended Macalester College in St. Paul and have often Tim O'Brian's name in the Macalester Alumni magazine, as he also attended there, so it was nice to finally read one of his books.
