"Ungrateful Daughters" is the first non-fiction book I enjoyed reading. Really! I used it during research on Queen Anne, and found myself unable to put the book down. Waller does a fantastic job bringing the characters and the landscape to life, making this read more like a novel than nonfiction.

I have always been a little obssesed with 'God with the Wind' as well as the book 'Scarlett' not written by Margaret Mitchell. This book tells not only about Rhett Butler's mysterious past, it sheds more light on Belle Watling, a few of Scarlet's dead husbands and even Ashley Wilkes. Fun, gossipy stuff for anyone who wanted 'Gone with the Wind' to go on a little longer.

I remember reading this before and not loving it, but this time it was totally awesome. Sure, you hate every single character, including the narrators, and it is filled with horrible people doing horrible things to each other. But it just sucks you in and is totally fascinating. Victorians had no idea what to do with this book and I have to confess that I don't know how much better I am, but it's pretty great. At the very least, it is an extraordinary feat in construction and the layers of meaning in almost every seemingly unimportant instance are astounding.

This book was astonishing and a delight to read. The central character, who is writing a letter to the Chinese president, explains how he has come from nothing to his current position through guile and deceit, not necessarily his own. It is beautifully crafted both as a story and as a piece of writing. The quality of the character's English improves as he advances and the whole tale is an unsanitised view of Indian business culture. It is almost satirical in its personification of the characters involved.

This is a well-written book, but Ellis' obsession with the details of couture culture lulled me into submission while the psychology just made my skin crawl. I realize that was the point and I can appreciate Ellis' craft, but it just was not for my sensibilities.
