By far, one of my favorite of Haines' books. The plot was straight-forward at first, but ended up becoming intricate, which I love. and the "bad guy" could have been one of many. About half way through, I thought I knew who he was, but things kept happening that tried to make me change my mind. Someone else came along, and well... you think this one? maybe.....? So you keep reading. And boy, when you get to the ending....!! I was right, but did NOT think this was the way they were going to go with it!! (The boyfriend situation was not working out the way I had planned, either.. and now I have NO idea what's going to happen, there. Wow, Sarah Booth has some bad luck!) Good job, Mrs. Haines, your work just keeps getting better and better! I cannot wait to find the next in the series. And I couldn't be happier that there are more to read, after that!

Almost a 5 star read. I'll never be sick of misplaced princess books.. it doesn't get old. I do with authors would realize clumsiness is not a personality trait though. I did like that the main character had to use and learn skills (and wasn't insta awesome at them) to defeat the big baddie. Would love to read more written by this author in the this world!

Two same-subject books arrived one day. The books are so alike that I just goofed on which one I read and which I took back to the library. Thayer's book is the one I'll buy and keep. His introduction has a "Claimer" rather than a "Disclaimer" which publishers put in to abrogate responsibility for anyone croaking as a result of eating the wrong thing. Thayer scoffs openly at a publisher that wrote "Neither the authors nor the publishers in any way endorse consumption or other uses of wild plants that are mentioned in this book." What a hoot! Thayer stands by his work, takes responsibility for any erroneous information, which I'll guess means it's all good, researched stuff, and then writes "But, of course, I am not responsible for your mistakes." This book will be on my reference shelf just as soon as I balance my checkbook.

Despite its foul language and occasional violence it has an intriguing storyline that keeps one's interest. The main character, Ed Kennedy is a 19 year old posing as a 20 year old so he be a cab driver in Australia. Ed begins receiving aces in each card suit - one at a time. He must figure out what the clues on each of the four aces means and then how he can help. It is interesting to read how Ed decides what to do in each situation as it presents itself. A book well worth the time to read!!

When I started reading this book I couldn't figure out why it had won the Putlitzer. Give it a couple of chapters and then you'll start to figure that out. When I picked up the book, I didn't know anything other than that it had won the Pulitzer. The back tells you that its subject is black slaveowners. That's all you need to know. I will warn you that it's not for everyone.

Very amusing, easy-to-read literature. People in other reviews have been saying that anyone who lived outside of the UK wouldn't be able to get the jokes, but I live in Australia and I'm pretty sure that I understood all of the jokes. (At least all of the ones that I picked up on, anyway!) I very much enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes English comedy and knows at least a decent amount about British culture.
