The writing was great and kept me reading despite the fact that the story was frustrating (too realistic I suppose..., the meaningless fights that can happen in families), and the 2 main characters were pathetic in many ways. The book seems to criticize the thankless/listless behavior of the post-depression suburbian families, that probably applies to other generations as well.

I'm a dork, but I really enjoyed this book. Light-hearted and easy to read. I listened to it as well as read the book version.

A must-read for anglophiles. Really delves into the history of London following the fortunes of specific families from prehistiric times through to the present day. Very enjoyable for history and literature buffs alike.

I really liked this one -- tying the whole mystery as tightly to Fix's past like this was a great way to justify a lot of flashbacks to his youth, and as a result, I feel like I know him a lot better now. And in general- the world is wonderful too. Explaining everything through ghosts(including zombies and werewolves) sounded a bit far fetched in the first book, but I'm in agreement with it by now! And I love how dark the world in general is. (view spoiler) Cliffhangers are so evil! I wasn't planning on reading the fifth book right away, but I have to know what will come of the last few pages!

Makes LORD OF THE FLIES look like good clean fun! I had to teach this book as a high school teacher. It was hard selling it to the kids because I really hated it myself. The problem is that Cormier is writing a book that just doesn't succeed on any level. SHOCK LEVEL -- no, it doesn't shock. It's not like A CLOCKWORK ORANGE where the violence is over the top, sensational, and terrifying. These kids are more like whiners and snitches who react to verbal taunts with elaborate schemes and weird paranoia rather than actual fistfights. BUDDY MOVIE -- no, there are no buddies. It's not like THE OUTSIDERS because neither the hero nor any of the villains have any real interest in sticking together. Everyone betrays everyone else at the drop of a chocolate bar, over stakes that are never quite explained. SOCIAL COMMENTARY -- no, there are no important social issues explored in any coherent fashion. One has a vague sense that this story is happening towards the end of the Sixties, yet oddly, the boys never mention drugs or allude to the fact that kids are getting high all over the place. They're all like boys in the a big plastic bubble. For reasons that are never explained. RELIGION -- this is a Catholic school, and it's rendered as a very ugly place. But there's no discussion of how church teachings have twisted the minds of the boys, or the brothers. There's also no religious hostility (or racial hostility) directed against boys from other parts of town. It's hard to believe these are real Catholic kids since they never allude to having rival groups or feeling like there are people in other neighborhoods they want to kill. They spend most of the time spying on each other.

Duty reading, thanks to too many "I want something like" questions I get on this one. Do I have to say it's not really to my taste? No, I didn't think so. Ah well, reading this alongside the Friedman is proving amusing. Sort of. Well, no. I don't know. *sigh* (13)

a fun read - a little light reading to break up my non-fiction books. In Britain, post Great War female detective of sorts takes on a case which turns into something much larger. Deviates from the story for the middle section to give us more about her past history. Addresses issues of war veterans, women's rights, class conflict, etc.

There's some pretty incredible poetry in here, but you've got to read it for the sound, first, and then worry about the meaning. Alas, when I write a paper on it I have to do the reverse. (Aside: They don't teach us, in English departments, to write about aesthetic effects of texts, so when we get to a point where we have the chance to analyze that, it's a lot harder than a simple close reading.) Check out "Sunday Morning," one of the greatest poems ever, and "Rabbit as King of the Ghosts" for something more fun, but still movingly heroic. "Loneliness in Jersey City" too. I think Stevens actually agrees "that things are all right" even though the phrase ("They think that things are all right" (my emphasis)) sounds cynical. This comes from the fact that the reason they think things are all right is that the deer and the dachsund are one, which he's already established is the case at the beginning.
