The Da Vinci code was a pale imitation of Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum. Eco wove a amazing tapestry of intrigue where bored librarians take their massive knowledge of history and literature and concoct a conspiracy theory as a lark. The theory takes on a life of it's own as the wackos of the world decide that the made up conspiracy theory is the real explanation of what is happening in the world. Although the plot drags on at times, this is an amazing read.

If I had to choose one word to describe this book, it would simply be WOW. Nonfiction that reads like the best of fiction, Unbroken details the life of Louie Zamperini, a wild kid turned Olympic athlete turned WW II Bombadier turned crash survivor stranded on a raft in the Pacific. And there's more, but I don't want too many spoilers in this review. As the title states, it's a story of survival, resilience, and redemption. I'd like to add well-written, page-turning, fascinating, tear-jerking, inspiring, amazing. This story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. It motivates me to get up off the couch and work hard to make my many dreams come true, to overcome my many obstacles and weaknesses. To test my upper limits. Unbroken, as far as I'm concerned, is a buy-it-now-even-though-it's-still-in-hardback-because-it's-worth-having-on-your-bookshelf-for-years-to-come must read.
