American Pie 2 (Amerikan Pastası 2) (Blu-Ray Disc) TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

I had mixed feelings about this book. The book can be said to have three main aims: 1) Demonstrate a pattern of egregious omissions, fallacies, and irrelevant clutter across the most popular high school-level American history textbooks 2) Explain how and why this pattern came to be 3) Argue the effects on American students of this style of "teaching" I think that Loewen does a great job with point #1 and #3. Oft-cited historical figures were much more controversial than generally portrayed - eg, Helen Keller was not just an advocate for the disabled but a prominent member of the Socialist Party, Jefferson a skeptic of organized religion who wrote his own New Testament devoid of all miracles, etc. More importantly, textbooks fail to contextualize a host of movements and events, such as the role Columbus played in establishing the slave trade from Europe to the Caribbean, the backlash against Native American tribes like the Seminoles for their assimilation of runaway slaves and even disenchanted white colonists, and more. I found Loewen's examinations of these histories - heavily informed by the lens of a sociologist - to be the best part of the book. Arguing why these patterns exist is where I felt that Loewen fell short. In different parts of the book, he talks of the desire "to indoctrinate blind patriotism," unwillingness to spark controversy, a desire to illustrate history as a constant and forward march towards progress, the role of curricular boards in approving textbooks, the nature of the textbook publishing industry, and the laziness of its editors. These all seem like valid reasons for the shortcomings illustrated, but they soon become redundant and tired as more and more of the text is filled by Loewen's own meta-commentary. Moreover, as the book goes on, more of his examples tend to be omissions rather than mis-characterizations. And while I agree with him that there is a lack of critical analysis in the coverage of the Vietnam War or our entry into the second war with Iraq, Loewen's suggested analysis would replace current monotonous and uncritical textbook coverage with critical but one-sided (eg, heavy to the left) views of those conflicts. I also can't help but think that even half-decent coverage of America's interactions with the rest of the world would necessitate coverage of so much material that it's no wonder foreign policy gets a short shrift in US history textbooks - foreign policy should be a whole other course, or more, in and of itself. All in all, Lies My Teacher Told Me, is worth reading, but once you're halfway through, it's probably a better skim than read.
