** spoiler alert ** If I were a teenaged girl maybe I’d have liked this more. That is, of course, the target audience. The cover, which is really cute, promised me Tim Burton and Edgar Allen Poe (not mutually exclusive if you ask me). It mostly gave me every high school stereotype rewarmed. Charlotte has a plan for the return of school. She will clique jump and become a cool girl. She will get Damen to go out with her, because he is a nice jock. She will get on the cheerleading team with Petula, the alpha cool girl and the two Wendys, Petula’s sycophants. Charlotte is naturally ignored by the cheerleaders but she does get to be Damen’s lab partner by default. So excited, she follows him out as he and Petula, his girlfriend, arguing over why he was late and why Petula didn’t wait to be his lab partner. Petula slams the door in Charlotte’s face and Charlotte chokes to death on a gummy bear. She ends up in Dead School getting lectures on how to settle up with her shortened life and move on. It’s a well attended class. Her mentor is Piccolo Pam (though I’m still not sure you could swallow enough of a piccolo to suffocate). They need to learn how to pass on and they also need to learn to haunt the house they ‘live’ in so it’s not sold out from under them (this really made no sense to me). Pru, Petula’s ghostly counterpart, instantly hates Charlotte and begins to pick on her. Naturally Charlotte has no interest in this. All she wants to do is get back to Damen and learns that she can possess Scarlet, Petula’s Goth (rolls eyes) younger sister. Scarlet can see Charlotte and is okay with sharing her body and win over Damen commences. And that’s about all there is to this. Charlotte could have been so much more. Okay, I was Charlotte back in the day. I had my Petula and two Wendy’s. I can get the idea of wanting to fit in and seeing clinging to that but this book is way longer than needs be and that is about all Charlotte does. Rather than try to fit in and help her ghostly companions she does nothing but single mindedly chase Damen. It just makes her sad and pathetic to be so defined by a guy (and it’s made worse with the nagging thought that a lot of teens are like this). It’s one of a series. One was enough for me.
