I really liked the story of this young single fatty and her relationship with her 93 year old neighbor. It was predictable in some ways but also sweet and enjoyable. I read it very quickly.

Okay book, not one of his best. I learned some new info about politics and appointments.

I like all of Nevada Barr's mysteries, but this was definitely one of the best I've ever read. As always, she described both the characters and the story's location very well. The plot twists and turns were unpredictable, making for a great sense of suspense. She also managed to accurately portray some of the politics inherent to national parks. Being from Texas originally, I especially enjoyed that the story was located in Big Bend National Park.

This was an excellent first book by Peter V Brett. He has created a world where demons rule the night as people cower in their warded homes. Finally a young boy,Arlen, has had enough and sets out to find ways to kill the demons. Interwoven are two other characters, Leesha, a herb gather/healer and Rojer a traveling minstrel and their stories as well. I can see the influence of both Terry Brooks and George R.R. Martin in his writing. Certainly if you enjoy this type of literature you will enjoy The Warded Man.

it's been eight or nine years since i last read this, and it almost, but doesn't quite, hold up. it's still probably the best book i've ever read about what fighting in vietnam-- and coming home-- was really like. even though it takes place in space in the year 3000 or whatever. the writing is uniformly excellent, and thankfully free of that hemingwayian/mailerian macho bullshit. this is just a book about a guy trying to live through madness. it's also very funny, being essentially a satire. not a catch-22 type satire, more like a beckettian satire. my one problem with it this time around is that there really isn't much conflict. i mean, yes, it's a war, and they're trying to survive, and when they come home there's the conflict of trying to fit in in a different world, and there's the conflict inside the army, trying to stay with the people they know and love, but there's never any internal conflict, and the external conflict is always just a matter of plugging away, chugging on through, hoping for the best, because that's all you really can do once you get drafted... the point is, the only way through hell is to go mad and pray... which makes sense, but doesn't exactly make for compelling drama. that being said, it's still up there with my other all-time non-pkd sci-fi favorites: The Genocides, Rogue Moon, The Walking Shadow, Paradox Men, Nova, Time Is the Simplest Thing... maybe i shouldn't have reread it, i don't know... so much of it is the power of the ideas and the crazy A Handful of Dust-type narrative turns it takes...

I'd definately have to say this book falls into my "favorite books" category. I noticed alot of people reading the book at my school, but I never imagined reading it myself. For one because it was pretty BIG, and knowing me, I figured I wouldn't finish it. Also, I had heard it was about "vampires" and that type of stuff just doesn't interest me...So I thought. Now I am a huge Twiglight fan! It isn't neccessarily a vampire story but a love story. What girl doesn't love to sit back and read a good romance novel? Of course we love all of that mushy stuff! Not only did it appeal to my feminine mushy love side, but it had moments of acTion and suspense that kept me up pasT my desired bedtime, not aBle to wait to figure out "WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT"?? Don't let the thickness of the book fool you! It will have you flipping through pages like nothing! You'll go from page one to one hundred with ease not noticing the time flying by nor the pages you have whipped through! Everything about this book is simply remarkable. The way each character was described, you could actually smell the sweet smell of Bella's blood, feel Edward's cool finger tips, envision the beautiful, pale, but deadly inhuman creatures. Not only is the book lovely but it is appropriately sexy and lures you into Edward's trap.He makes you want him...One of my favorite lines had to be when he told Bella that he was tired of resisting her AND when he said he was thirsty for her blood. The love pouring through Edward through the words of this book mskes you want to steal him away from Bella and hope and pray that sexy romantic vampires were real!!

The third instalment was so disappointing! I am heartbroken that the series took such a downward turn after such a great beginning. The first book Poison Study, was by far the best of the series. After finishing it, I thought this series would easily become one of my favourites. Then I read Magic Study and I’m thinking “Hmmmm…. This is good but not quite as good as I was expecting”. Following Yelena’s life as a magician’s student/ apprentice was interesting, but not as enthralling as her life as a Poison Taster in Ixia. I then read the third book, praying it would redeem the series. Sadly it didn’t, it just made it worse. So the third book follows Yelena on her quest for revenge (Am I right? I may not be, because by page 50 of the book, I didn’t really care where the characters were going or what would happen in the end). That is REALLY sad, hey? Usually with series you are just dying to know how everything ends up and resolves itself. By the end of this series I couldn’t care less. I went from being utterly obsessed over Yelena and Valek (in addition to all of the other more minor characters), to not caring at all! Something clearly went wrong with the storytelling. As a few others have pointed out, the book is called Fire Study, so I thought I was safe to assume that she would be learning a new skill or something would be happening… perhaps to do with fire!?! But to my knowledge, this didn’t happen. Instead, the third book was just a really reaaaaally long, drawn out continuation of Magic Study. Come on! Couldn’t something new and exciting have happened? By the end I was sick to death of the story. The most annoying factor for me was Yelena and Valek’s relationship, as I pointed out in my review of Magic Study. Ugh!! Talk about a let down! Nothing developed between them after book 1! You didn’t see their relationship blossom or fall apart or frankly do much at all. There needed to be some sort of development, but there wasn’t. They just went along being happy happy, seeing each other now and then and that was it. All of the emotions between the characters that we saw in Book 1 were completely neglected in Books 2 and 3. *Sigh* I am just so disappointed! I will continue to recommend Poison Study to people, but will probably advise for them to stop there.

Beautiful, poetic language. I especially liked Her Black Mantilla and The Postman's Cottage. This man can write!
