A Review of Mary Karr’s The Liar’s Club While reading Mary Karr’s The Liar’s Club, I was astonished to find that it was less fiction and more fact than I had expected. This book is a memoire of Mary Karr, beginning in her young life. I believe that knowing that this book was a memoire whilst I read, made it all the more poignant. What is truly commendable about The Liar’s Club, other than the extraordinary narration, is the emotion that was obviously put into it so that the reader might feel the anguish and dysfunction of the author. The most loveable quality about this book, for me, was its dark, witty humor. Clever, quipping observations peppered the pages, giving what would otherwise be a sometimes disturbing story both bearable and interesting with its comic relief. The true gem quality of this book is not the situation,-life wrote that for Mary Karr- but the light in which it is portrayed and offered to the reader. The narration, having been mentioned before, is what makes this piece so memorable. Firstly, the fact that she chose to write this book as a memoire and not mask her story in different pieces about fictional characters says a lot about Mary Karr as both a writer and a person. This fact makes the book instantly more real for the reader to delve into. Mary Karr’s The Liar’s Club has a way of interweaving and cultivating an intimate relationship between the narrator and the reader. There is almost an element of trust that is conveyed in being a part of this confidence that affects the audience in an almost palatable way. The narrator’s voice and way of seeing the events of her life and the aspects of the world around her is almost poetic. There is so much imagery in The Liar’s Club that in many ways, it reads like a prose poem. These images bring both beauty and darkness to the piece and play the scenes that are being described so that the reader is liable to forget that they are outside of the story and rather believe that they too are just another member or this dysfunctional family being described. Another notable element of The Liar’s Club is its deep-seated characterization. Mary Karr does a fantastic job of interchanging both telling and showing. She must tell the audience some things due to the fact that she is the narrator, but she allows the characters to tell the audience a lot about themselves on their own. Karr does this by creating almost what I would describe as moving vignettes as she jumps through time throughout the memoire. For instance, Karr’s mother is seen rather than described as being very anxious. The way in which Karr chooses to portray this nervousness shows her mother in an extremely endearing light. This careful narration does a lot to convey the way the author feels about certain people and situations in The Liar’s Club, rather than allowing the reader to draw their own conclusion. The last element that makes this story both thrilling and poignant is the sequence of events in which it is told. Instead of being very linear in her telling, Karr allows themes or thought to drive her story forward, rather than the passing of time. This does a lot for the piece in making it intriguing, as well as cohesive. This element also adds to strengthening the relationship between the author and the reader because it is told much like someone would relay a story when sitting right next to you. This element of craft makes both the speaker and the story seem more real. In total, Mary Karr’s The Liar’s Club is a fantastic read. It is not only beautifully and artfully composed, but it exposes a little known truth that few have the courage to admit; all families comprised of more than a single person are dysfunctional. Mary Karr took a step to exposing a little of her personal story and an even bigger step to revealing the beauty that hides beneath the shadows of familial dysfunction.

For five long years, Charlie Cooper has been searching for a dead woman, Angeline St Cyr, the love of his life. His gut instinct tells him that she is still alive, that she didn't die from the horrific injuries she sustained in a car accident. His search has brought him to the Caribbean island of Jacqueme Dominique. But when Charlie's hunch pays off and he locates Angeline, she is none too pleased to see him. Charlie doesn't care, he wants answers. What really happened in New Orleans when she was hit by a car and nearly died? And why has she been in hiding for five years? Charlie Cooper has a past as well. After being kidnapped with one of his students and left to die years before, Charlie has made an enemy of the sadistic murderer and extortionist, Willem Vorhees. And Vorhees wants revenge on Charlie. What better way than to target Angeline? The author's first novel 'Hoodoo Money' introduced us to the secondary characters of Charlie Cooper and Angeline St Cyr when their brief but intense relationship ended with Angeline's 'death'. Sanderson and Braeden Montgomery, the couple from her previous novel return to help Charlie and Angeline. As with her previous book, author Sharon Cupp Pennington introduces another couple - Brent St Cyr, one of Angeline's brothers and bush pilot Kat O'Leary - who hopefully will have their story in her next book. Sharon Cupp Pennington has written a well-crafted novel with multi-layered plots and an impressive cast of fully-developed characters. Her vivid descriptions of the lush tropical island setting, complete with jungle, heat, humidity and bugs is palpable. This is another first-class romantic suspense from an extremely talented writer. 4.5 stars
